The Implications of Pay Transparency in the Presence of Over- and Underconfident Agents

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2022
Many companies are under pressure to improve pay transparency; however, its impact on their agents and principals remains unclear. As a way to investigate the upside and downside of pay transparency, we conduct our study based on a scenario in which agents have “cognitive bias” (namely, over‐ or underconfident

Perceptual Underconfidence

European Journal of Psychological Assessment, 2012
Experimental interest in human decision making has been fertile in the past two decades. It is generally recognized that answers to questions involving general knowledge tend to produce overconfidence, whereas responses to perceptual tasks often result in underconfidence.

Updating Beliefs for a Decision: Neural Correlates of Uncertainty and Underconfidence [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Neuroscience, 2010
Some decisions are made after obtaining several pieces of information, whereas others are reached quickly. Such differences may depend on the quality of information acquired, as well as individual variability in how cautiously evidence is evaluated. The current study examined neural activity while subjects accumulated sequential pieces of evidence and ...

Does Retrieval Fluency Contribute to the Underconfidence-With-Practice Effect?

Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2005
Judgments of learning (JOLs) made during multiple study-test trials underestimate increases in recall performance across those trials, an effect that has been dubbed the underconfidence-with-practice (UWP) effect. In 3 experiments, the authors examined the contribution of retrieval fluency to the UWP effect for immediate and delayed JOLs.

The Underconfidence Wage Penalty

SSRN Electronic Journal
Recent evidence on the gender wage gap shows that it has remained stagnant for those with a university degree and is the largest at the top of the earnings distribution. Many studies have explored institutional factors that contribute to the gender wage gap, but there is little evidence on the role of non-cognitive traits, including overconfidence ...

The contributions of anchoring and past-test performance to the underconfidence-with-practice effect

Psychonomic Bulletin and Review, 2012
In the underconfidence-with-practice effect, people's judgments of learning (JOLs) typically underestimate memory performance across multiple study-test phases. Whereas the past-test hypothesis suggests that this underconfidence stems from participants' reliance on earlier test performance to make subsequent JOLs (despite new learning), the anchoring ...

The Incidence of Overconfidence and Underconfidence Effects in Medical Student Examinations

Journal of Surgical Education, 2018
Overconfidence is the tendency to overestimate the knowledge, capacity, or performance one really possesses. This cognitive bias could be potentially dangerous in medical decision-making, considering the impact it could have on patient health care. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of overconfidence and underconfidence in medical ...

Overconfidence and Underconfidence in Usage Experience

2014
Consumers’ subjective assessment of their knowledge (i.e., knowledge confidence) often does not match their actual knowledge (Alba and Hutchinson 2000). This phenomenon is called knowledge miscalibration. Although previous research investigated the effect of knowledge miscalibration on purchasing decisions (e.g., Alba and Hutchinson 2000; Burson 2007 ...

Simultaneous Over- and Underconfidence: Evidence from Experimental Asset Markets [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Risk and Uncertainty, 2002
In this paper we investigate individual overconfidence within the context of an experimental asset market. Overall, 72 participants traded one risky asset on six markets of 12 participants each. Our results indicate that participants are not generally prone to overconfidence.
