Undercooling measurement in a low-gravity containerless environment [PDF]

open access: yes, 1981
A technique is described for measuring the amount of undercooling for samples processed in a low-gravity containerless environment. The time of undercooling is determined by measuring the time of cooling before nucleation and recalescence by two infrared

Building parameter influence on overheating and undercooling risks in the Mediterranean social housing stock of southern Spain [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences
In recent years, there has been a notable rise in temperatures, along with an escalation of heatwaves as a consequence of global warming. This phenomenon conspicuously impacts summer and winter, leading to modifications in the building energy balance ...

Dendritic Growth at Very Low Undercoolings [PDF]

open access: yesEurophysics Letters (EPL), 1995
We have performed numerical simulations of dendritic growth at very low undercoolings in two spatial dimension using a phase-field model. In this regime of growth, the dendrites present sharp corners in the tip region while the trailing region is parabolic, and the corresponding side-branching structures resemble the shape of the tip. The scaling $vρ^2\

Entropy‐Stable and Energy‐Conservative Fully‐Discrete Finite Element Method for Non‐Isothermal Phase‐Field Models

open access: yesProceedings in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, Volume 26, Issue 4, December 2026.
ABSTRACT This work presents a conforming finite‐element scheme for non‐isothermal phase‐field systems coupled to the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. The proposed numerical scheme preserves entropy production and total energy conservation exactly by variable transformations using entropy as the main variable instead of temperature.

Study on structure refinement mechanism in rapid solidification of a deeply undercooled Cu60Ni38Co2 alloy

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
Employing molten glass purification and cyclic overheating technologies, a Cu60Ni40 alloy was modified by introducing trace amounts of Co element. Through this process, we aimed to understand how the addition of Co element influences the microstructure ...

Liquid state property, structural evolution and mechanical behavior of TiFe alloy solidified under electrostatic levitation condition

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2018
The thermophysical properties of hypereutectic Ti63.64Fe36.36 alloy at both normal and undercooled states, including density, volume expansion coefficient, ratio of specific heat to emissivity were measured by electrostatic levitation (ESL) method ...

Combined Process‐ and Phase‐Field‐Simulation to Predict the Microstructure of Single‐Crystal Ni‐Based Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 28, Issue 17, 9 September 2026.
A combined finite element and phase‐field approach predicts the evolution of microstructure during the directional solidification of Ni‐based superalloys. The model reveals how withdrawal rate, temperature gradient, and wall thickness control the dendrite spacing, highlighting the strong effect of surface regions in thin sections where dendrite growth ...

Entropy Decoding the Fundamental Law of Phase Competition in Glass Formation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 49, 3 September 2026.
We validate the integration of intermetallic and eutectic phases as initial phases for composition design. The phase competition mechanism in glass formation is quantitatively clarified based on the melting entropy of competing phases. Glass‐forming ability is modulated by tuning phase competition via the melting entropy of initial phases.

Undercooling of materials during solidification in space [PDF]

open access: yes, 1976
A theoretical research program was undertaken on the under cooling and solidification of materials under variable external field conditions. A catalog of theories and models of nucleation of solid phases in the melt is provided, as is a discussion of the

Nucleation Triggering of Highly Undercooled Xylitol Using an Air Lift Reactor for Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
Bio-based glass-forming materials are now considered for thermal energy storage in building applications. Among them, Xylitol appears as a biosourced seasonal thermal energy storage material with high potential.
