Correlation-log-based underwater navigation

Symposium on Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Technology, 2002
A navigation system for a launch-and-forget autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that can be realized with commercially available components is described. The navigation system will be truly autonomous, requiring only a knowledge of the vehicle's initial position and attitude.

Navigation of autonomous underwater vehicles based on artificial underwater landmarks

MTS/IEEE Oceans 2001. An Ocean Odyssey. Conference Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.01CH37295), 2002
Near underwater structures or the surface of shallow water, acoustic sensing based navigation of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) suffers from inaccurate positioning which is caused by acoustic sensing such as multi-pass and noisy data. In the paper a new underwater navigation method for AUVs is proposed based on artificial underwater landmarks ...

Underwater Navigation and Reconnaissance Trainer

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1969
<div class="htmlview paragraph">In recent years the phenomenal growth in the number of research submersibles has given rise to the need for research into trainers for submersible pilots and scientific observers similar to those used by aviators in Link-type trainers.

Latest Highlights in Acoustic Underwater Navigation

Navigation, 1977
the objective of this paper is to report the latest developments in acoustic underwater navigation. The prime area of concern will be accuracy: first, in the establishment of a transponder navigation field and new techniques for survey of that field; and second, in the determination and study of multipath propagation to limit range errors.

Underwater modem-based navigation aids

2010 7th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems, 2010
The utility of low power underwater digital acoustic communications (acomms) has a practical commercial history of fewer than 15 years. While earlier techniques provided data rates of perhaps 40 bits per second (bps), current noncoherent methods support data rates of many hundreds of bps, and coherent techniques provide many thousands of bps.

Recent Developments in Acoustic Underwater Navigation

Journal of Navigation, 1977
Acoustic transponders are employed in underwater navigation in situations in which a high degree of accuracy is required. Typical applications include underwater search, mapping, photography by a submersible or a towed vehicle and positioning of underwater work systems.

Navigation Technologies for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Part C (Applications and Reviews), 2008
With recent advances in battery capacity and the development of hydrogen fuel cells, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are being used to undertake longer missions that were previously performed by manned or tethered vehicles. As a result, more advanced navigation systems are needed to maintain an accurate position over a larger operational area ...

Underwater Navigation and Positioning Systems

1985
Advantages and disadvantages of long baseline navigation and supershort baseline navigation are considered. The two systems may be used in under-ice navigation; the final choice of system configuration depends on requirements for simplicity in use, accuracy and navigational range as well as on the type of navigational operation.
