α-Hydroxyketones as inhibitors of urease
Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry, 2004A variety of alpha-hydroxyketones (1-13) and alpha-diketones (14-20) were evaluated for their effect on the jack bean urease. Of 13 alpha-hydroxyketones (1-13) tested, 2,2'-thenoin (10) (IC(50)=0.18 mM), furoin (9) (IC(50)=0.36 mM), 2-hydroxy-1-phenylethanone (5) (IC(50)=0.47 mM) and acetol (1) (IC(50)=2.9 mM) showed potent inhibitory activity against ...

Recent Efforts in the Discovery of Urease Inhibitor Identifications
Current Topics in Medicinal Chemistry, 2022Abstract: Urease is an attractive drug target for designing anti-infective agents against pathogens such as Helicobacter pylori, Proteus mirabilis, and Ureaplasma urealyticum. In the past century, hundreds of medicinal chemists focused their efforts on explorations of urease inhibitors.

Piperidines: A new class of Urease inhibitors
Natural Product Research, 2006A variety of piperidines (2-12, 14-26) with variable substituents at N-atoms have been synthesized and evaluated as urease inhibitors. The synthesized compounds showed varying degree of urease inhibitory activity ranging from 31.97 to 254 microM. The size and electron-donating or -withdrawing effects of substituents influence the activity, which lead ...

The Fate of Nitrification and Urease Inhibitors in Simulated Bank Filtration
SSRN Electronic Journal, 2022Nitrification and urease inhibitors (NUI) are used in conjunction with nitrogen (N) fertilizers on agricultural soils to improve the efficiency of N fertilizers and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. After application, NUI might transfer to aquatic environments through leaching or surface runoff.

Urease Inhibitor Therapy in Infected Renal Stones
European Urology, 1981The strict dependence of struvite and carbonate apatite renal stones on the urease-producing germs confirm the need to combine bacterial urease inhibitor drugs with antibiotic treatment. Of the two antiurease drugs used the better results were obtained with acetohydroxamic acid, both for its minimum side effects and its more powerful urease-inhibitor ...

The effect of urease inhibitors on the encrustation of urethral catheters
Urological Research, 1998Encrustation and blockage of indwelling urethral catheters is primarily brought about by infection of the urinary tract by Proteus mirabilis or other urease-producing species. The bacteria colonise the catheter forming a biofilm community within a polysaccharide matrix.

Urease inhibitors for the treatment of H. pylori
Expert Opinion on Therapeutic PatentsHelicobacter pylori infects almost half of the World population. Although many infected people are symptom free, the microorganism can still cause a variety of gastrointestinal disorders and gastric adenocarcinoma. It is considered a priority pathogen for the development of new antibiotics by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Prevention of Ascending Pyelonephritis in Mice by Urease Inhibitors
Nephron, 2008The effect of 2 urease inhibitors, hydroxyurea and thiourea, on experimental ascending pyelonephritis by P. mirabilis was studied in mice undergoing water diuresis. It was found that hydroxyurea significantly diminished the number of bacteria in the kidneys, the severity and number of lesions as well as the number of excreted bacteria.

Česká a slovenská farmacie, 2014
In this review, an overview of the available literature on urease is presented. Urease is an enzyme which catalyzes the hydrolysis of urea. The occurrence of ureases and their functions are discussed thoroughly. The relationship of urease to ureolytic bacteria is examined, and the currently available urease inhibitors, both inorganic and natural, are ...

Enzyme electrode for inhibitors determination: urease-fluoride system
Analytical Chemistry, 1979An enzyme electrode is constructed and optimized for inhibitor determination. The urease electrode inhibited by fluoride ions is chosen as an example to illustrate the procedure. The enzyme is chemically bound with glutaraldehyde to a silicone membrane which is a part of the CO2 gas electrode.
