Genital Crohn's disease in pediatrics and genetic associations

open access: yesJPGN Reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Genital edema is a rare presentation of Crohn's disease (CD), also known as metastatic CD (MCD). This may precede, co‐occur with, or follow gastrointestinal symptoms and present a diagnostic challenge. We aimed to characterize the features, clinical courses, pathogenesis, and outcomes of patients with MCD to increase understanding and promote ...

Development of a Mouse Model of Uremic Cardiomyopathy: Investigating the Impact of Chronic Kidney Disease on Cardiac Function and Signaling Pathway. [PDF]

open access: yesFASEB J
Molecular changes in a mouse model of uremic cardiomyopathy. This model of 2,8‐DHA‐induced nephropathy in 129/Sv mice showed clinical features of uremic cardiomyopathy like reduced cardiac function and cardiac interstitial fibrosis and an unfavorable balance between protective and detrimental cardiac signaling.

Metabolic profiling of human plasma and urine in chronic kidney disease by hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry : a pilot study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
A typical characteristic of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the progressive loss in renal function over a period of months or years with the concomitant accumulation of uremic retention solutes in the body.

UREMIA [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association, 1916
When Bright noted an increase of urea in the blood and fluids of patients with severe nephritis and gave the name uremia to a group of symptoms likely to develop with these cases, he believed urea to be a highly toxic substance. The name uremia remains to us, although the term embraces now considerably more than urea intoxication.

Breaking Boundaries: Chronic Diseases and the Frontiers of Immune Microenvironments

open access: yesMed Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The immune microenvironment includes immune cells, cytokines, extracellular matrix, vesicles, etc. The interactions between these components form a unique local immune microecology. Although immunity serves as the defense against external pathogens, aberrant immune activation often contributes to disease development.

Development and Validation of a Capillary Electrophoresis Coupled to Mass Spectrometry Pipeline for Comparable Assessment of the Plasma Peptidome

open access: yesPROTEOMICS, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Although capillary electrophoresis coupled to mass spectrometry (CE‐MS) holds promise for urinary peptide profiling, only a limited number of studies have used CE‐MS to study plasma peptides. Here we describe the establishment of a workflow, including sample preparation, CE‐MS analysis, data processing and normalization optimized for the ...

The quest for a better understanding of chronic kidney disease complications: an update on uremic toxins

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Nephrology, 2014
Chronic kidney disease is characterized by a progressive reduction of glomerular filtration rate and/or the appearance of proteinuria, and subsequently the progressive retention of organic waste compounds called uremic toxins (UT). Over the last decades,

Investigation of the Urinary Peptidome to Unravel Collagen Degradation in Health and Kidney Disease

open access: yesPROTEOMICS, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Naturally occurring fragments of collagen type I alpha 1 chain (COL1A1) have been previously associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), with some fragments showing positive and others negative associations. Using urinary peptidome data from healthy individuals (n = 1131) and CKD patients (n = 5585) this aspect was investigated in detail ...
