Professor Eric Hall's letter in reply to mine with Dr. Porter (1982) makes two main criticisms: firstly, that my own protest is rendered “paradoxical” by my history as an animal experimenter; secondly, that the general policy of this journal intimated in the editorial comment which followed our letter signifies a “parochial” stance.
