Implications of a Circulating Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus in Nigeria

New England Journal of Medicine, 2010
The largest recorded outbreak of a circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV), detected in Nigeria, provides a unique opportunity to analyze the pathogenicity of the virus, the clinical severity of the disease, and the effectiveness of control measures for cVDPVs as compared with wild-type poliovirus (WPV).We identified cases of acute flaccid ...

Development of inactivated poliovirus vaccine derived from Sabin strains

Biologicals, 2006
In the course of Sabin-inactivated poliovirus vaccine (S-IPV) development, we have established high-yield virus production techniques based on Vero cell micro-carrier cultures. Development of specific ELISA tests to quantify the antigen content of S-IPV has been achieved.

Clearance of Immunodeficiency-associated Vaccine-derived Poliovirus Infection With Pocapavir

Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, 2020
Pocapavir exhibits antiviral activity against both polio and nonpolio enteroviruses. There is limited experience of the use of this investigational drug in young children with enteroviral infection. We describe the successful clearance of prolonged immunodeficiency-associated vaccine-derived type 3 poliovirus infection by pocapavir in an infant with ...

Vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV): Impact on poliomyelitis eradication

Vaccine, 2009
The live attenuated strains used in the oral poliovirus (OPV) have been the main tool in the WHO polio eradication programme. However, these strains replicate in the human gut and are excreted for several weeks after immunisation. During this period, the attenuating mutations in the vaccine strains can rapidly revert.

Progress with inactivated poliovirus vaccines derived from the Sabin strains.

Developments in biologicals, 2002
To produce a safe and effective inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV), we have developed S-IPV using Vero cells infected with the Sabin strains in a semi-production scale. All production steps including virus culture on microcarrier beads were highly reproducible.

Epidemiology and vaccination strategies against type-2 vaccine -derived poliovirus

2023
In 1988, the World Health Assembly passed a resolution to eradicate poliomyelitis, a disease which was endemic in 125 countries and paralyzed 350,000 children per year. Primarily through the large-scale use of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV), two of the three wild poliovirus (WPV) serotypes (types 2 and 3) have been declared as globally eradicated and ...
