Influence of temperature and light on the development of moth larvae: Different response in the sister species Orthosia gothica and Orthosia cerasi

open access: yesPhysiological Entomology, EarlyView.
Experimental rearing of Orthosia gothica and Orthosia cerasi larvae under four controlled climate‐chamber treatments (15°C vs. 20°C; 24h darkness vs.12h light/12h dark) to isolate temperature and light effects on development. Repeated measurements of larval body size, biomass and pupation timing to quantify how growth rates and developmental duration ...

Ungulate responses to the addition of silicate rock powder in acidified oak (Quercus robur) forests at the Veluwe, the Netherlands

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Addition of silicate rock powder (SRP) is an increasingly used measure to restore vegetation and fauna on acidified mineral‐poor soils in protected areas. In theory, however, the positive effects of SRP addition on vegetation may be offset by grazing and browsing ungulates attracted to higher‐quality forage.

Evidence that ericoid mycorrhizal shrubs can outcompete ectomycorrhizal trees for nitrogen in tannin‐rich litter

open access: yesEcosphere
Mycorrhizal associations of trees play a key role in ecosystem biogeochemistry, yet we know relatively little about the nutrient acquisition strategies of ericoid mycorrhizal (ErM) shrubs, despite their prevalence in forest understories.
