Complications after medullary thyroid carcinoma surgery: multicentre study of the SQRTPA and EUROCRINE® databases

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), EarlyView., 2020
This study investigated postoperative complications after surgery for medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) in Europe. Hypoparathyroidism, recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy and bleeding requiring reoperation occurred in 170 (26·2 per cent), 62 (13·7 per cent) and 17 (2·6 per cent) patients respectively.

Vagus nerve stimulation is a potential treatment for ischemic stroke

open access: yesNeural Regeneration Research, 2023
Microglia are the brain’s primary innate immune cells, and they are activated and affect pro-inflammatory phenotype or regulatory phenotype after ischemic stroke.

Combined minimally invasive vagal cranial nerve and trigeminocervical complex peripheral nerve stimulation produces prolonged improvement of severe painful peripheral neuropathy and hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience
IntroductionDiabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN), a debilitating complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), stems from bioenergetic failure and reduced vascular endothelial growth factor-A expression (VEGF-A), persisting despite optimal glycemic ...

Do the psychological effects of vagus nerve stimulation partially mediate vagal pain modulation?

open access: yesNeurobiology of Pain, 2017
There is preclinical and clinical evidence that vagus nerve stimulation modulates both pain and mood state. Mechanistic studies show brainstem circuitry involved in pain modulation by vagus nerve stimulation, but little is known about possible indirect ...

Vagus nerve stimulation activates two distinct neuroimmune circuits converging in the spleen to protect mice from kidney injury

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2021
Significance The ability of vagus nerve stimulation to generate anti-inflammatory and tissue-protective effects has been known for some time. We have made use of cutting-edge tools to precisely map the neural circuits that contribute to beneficial ...

Without getting under your skin: non-invasive stimulation activates the vagus nerve

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience
Cervical non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS) has emerged as a practical neuromodulation approach with FDA-cleared indications in primary headache disorders, yet skepticism persists over whether transcutaneous stimulation can reliably engage vagal

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation as a novel therapy connecting the central and peripheral systems: a review

open access: yesInternational Journal of Surgery
Currently, clinical practice and scientific research mostly revolve around a single disease or system, but the single disease-oriented diagnostic and therapeutic paradigm needs to be revised. This review describes how transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve

Electroacupuncture regulates inflammatory cytokines by activating the vagus nerve to enhance antitumor immunity in mice with breast tumors.

open access: yesLife Science, 2021
AIMS The aim of this study was to explore the potential effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at ST36 on mice bearing breast tumors by regulating inflammatory cytokines to enhance antitumor immunity via vagus nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS Female BALB/c mice
