Vancomycin Revisited - 60 years later

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health, 2014
Vancomycin is one of the older antibiotics that has been now in clinical use close to 60 years. Earlier on, vancomycin was associated with many side effects including vestibular and renal, most likely due to impurities contained .in early vancomycin lots.

Emergence of Staphylococcus aureus Resistance to Antimicrobial Peptides Nisin, NZ2114 and Bacitracin Involves Multiple Phenotypic Changes

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
The AMP‐induced mutant Staphylococcus aureus strain nzR showed increased resistance, five gene mutations, and decreased surface anion levels. AMPs affect the NDH‐2 protein encoded by ndh gene inhibiting the growth of S. aureus. The deletion of the ndh gene promotes the development of AMPs resistance.

Appropriate use of vancomycin in a cardiac surgical unit

open access: yesJournal of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Background Antibiotic resistance is a rapidly growing problem. Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are major worries, particularly in developing nations where cost-effectiveness is essential.

The emergence of vancomycin-intermediate and vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Microbiology and Infection, 2006
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is well-recognised as a major cause of infection in the health care setting but, even more worryingly, is now emerging in the community. The glycopeptides-notably vancomycin-have traditionally been the mainstay of treatment of MRSA but overuse has led to the emergence of vancomycin-intermediate and ...

Advances in Small Molecule Inhibitors Targeting the Bacterial Lipoprotein Transport System (Lol) in Gram‐Negative Bacteria

open access: yesChemistry – An Asian Journal, EarlyView.
The lipoprotein transport system (Lol) is a crucial target for combating multidrug‐resistant gram‐negative bacteria. This review discusses the structural and functional aspects of the LolABCDE complex, recent advances in small‐molecule inhibitors, and challenges, such as permeability and resistance.

Prospective evaluation of vancomycin therapeutic usage and trough levels monitoring

open access: yesJournal of Infection in Developing Countries, 2018
Introduction: Vancomycin is the cornerstone of parenteral therapy for serious methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections. Optimal dosing of vancomycin is patient specific due to its narrow therapeutic window.

Oral vancomycin solution is superior to capsule in inducing clinical biomarker and endoscopic remission in children with atypical ulcerative colitis

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Aims Atypical colitis (presenting reverse gradient colitis, backwash ileitis or rectal sparing) is associated with primary sclerosing cholangitis–ulcerative colitis (PSC). Oral vancomycin has been used to manage paediatric atypical colitis with/without confirmed PSC. Different preparations had shown different efficacy.

Evaluating and leveraging large language models in clinical pharmacology and therapeutics assessment: From exam takers to exam shapers

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Aims In medical education, the ability of large language models (LLMs) to match human performance raises questions about their potential as educational tools. This study evaluates LLMs' performance on Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (CPT) exams, comparing their results to medical students and exploring their ability to identify poorly formulated
