The mature green vanilla beans possess no characteristic flavor, although the subsequent curing process after harvest generates a strong flavor with vanillin as the main component. American Journal of Botany, 1955UP TO 1937, when Bouriquet and Boiteau presented their paper on the asymbiotic germination of the seeds of Vanila planifolia, the seeds of this plant were considered to be nonviable. They obtained some germination on a glucose-agar medium containing a decoction of soil and parts of the mature vanilla plant.
