VCA supercooling in a swine partial hindlimb model

open access: yesScientific Reports
Vascularized composite allotransplantations are complex procedures with substantial functional impact on patients. Extended preservation of VCAs is of major importance in advancing this field.

Tolerance of a Vascularized Composite Allograft Achieved in MHC Class-I-mismatch Swine via Mixed Chimerism

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2022
BackgroundVascularized composite allografts (VCAs) allow reconstruction of devastating injuries and amputations, yet require lifelong immunosuppression that is associated with significant morbidity.

Recellularization of Bioengineered Scaffolds for Vascular Composite Allotransplantation

open access: yesFrontiers in Surgery, 2022
Traumatic injuries or cancer resection resulting in large volumetric soft tissue loss requires surgical reconstruction. Vascular composite allotransplantation (VCA) is an emerging reconstructive option that transfers multiple, complex tissues as a whole subunit from donor to recipient.

Hand disease in scleroderma: a clinical correlate for chronic hand transplant rejection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Chronic rejection remains a potential long-term consequence of hand composite tissue allotransplantation (CTA). Scleroderma has already been proposed as a model for chronic facial allograft rejection based on potential parallels of observed progression ...

Exploring Iodide and Hydrogen Sulfide as ROS Scavengers to Delay Acute Rejection in MHC-Defined Vascularized Composite Allografts

open access: yesAntioxidants
Vascularized composite allografts (VCA) face ischemic challenges due to their limited availability. Reperfusion following ischemia triggers oxidative stress and immune reactions, and scavenger molecules could mitigate ischemia–reperfusion injuries and ...

Local injections of tacrolimus-loaded hydrogel reduce systemic immunosuppression-related toxicity in vascularized composite allotransplantation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
BACKGROUND Routine application of vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) is hampered by immunosuppression-related health comorbidities. To mitigate these we developed an inflammation-responsive hydrogel for local immunosuppression.

Case Report: Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder as a serious complication of vascularized composite allotransplantation. [PDF]

open access: yesFront Transplant
Vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) is an emerging field in transplant surgery. Despite overall positive outcomes, VCA confers risk for multiple complications related to the procedure and subsequent immunosuppression.

Current Status of Kidney Xenotransplantation in Basic Research

open access: yesOrgan Medicine, Volume 3, Issue 2, Page 87-101, June 2026.
Kidney xenotransplantation is a potential solution to the organ shortage for end‐stage kidney disease. This review systematically elaborates on the application advances of donor pig gene editing technologies, the molecular mechanisms and regulatory strategies of xenogeneic immune rejection, and the optimization approaches of immune compatibility ...

Development‐based In Vivo Bioreactor Strategy for Challenging Senescent Bone Reconstruction

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 28, 18 May 2026.
We present a development‐based in vivo bioreactor strategy to generate rejuvenated bone grafts (vBR‐Bone) within aged hosts. By enclosing vBR‐Bone fragments within an asymmetric biomimetic periosteum, segmental femoral defects in aged mice were successfully repaired within 6 weeks. Mechanistically, the multifactors of vBR‐Bone reconstitute a remodeling

Laryngeal Transplantation in Cancer Patients: Evaluation of Surgical Outcomes and Functional Recovery

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 5, May 2026.
Our pilot clinical study in laryngeal transplantation achieved divergent outcomes: two cases maintained functional speech/swallowing with around 2 year graft survival and have been ongoing, while two succumbed to sepsis (10mo) and hemorrhagic recurrence (11mo).
