Functional characterization of transcriptional enhancers in an Anopheles genetic locus controlling natural resistance to the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum

open access: yesEpigenetics & Chromatin
Background Anopheles mosquitoes and the malaria parasites they transmit remain a significant global health problem. Most genomic and functional genomic studies of mosquitoes have focused on the protein-coding genome, and comparatively little is known ...

The influence of temperature and humidity on the flight activity of Culicoides imicola both under laboratory and field conditions

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2019
Background Insight into the factors that regulate the circadian host-seeking flight activity of Culicoides vectors (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) will be of importance to assess the risk of transmission of Culicoides-borne pathogens.

Permanental vectors

open access: yesStochastic Processes and their Applications, 2012
A permanental vector is a generalization of a vector with components that are squares of the components of a Gaussian vector, in the sense that the matrix that appears in the Laplace transform of the vector of Gaussian squares is not required to be either symmetric or positive definite.

The anti‐CRISPR protein AcrIE8.1 inhibits the type I‐E CRISPR‐Cas system by directly binding to the Cascade subunit Cas11

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we present the structure of AcrIE8.1, a previously uncharacterized anti‐CRISPR protein that inhibits the type I‐E CRISPR‐Cas system. Through a combination of structural and biochemical analyses, we demonstrate that AcrIE8.1 directly binds to the Cas11 subunit of the Cascade complex to inhibit the CRISPR‐Cas system.

Nationwide surveillance detects yellow fever and chikungunya viruses in multiple Aedes mosquito species in Nigeria

open access: yesParasites & Vectors
Background Since the reemergence of yellow fever in 2017, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has been coordinating responses to local outbreaks with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Molecular Characterization and Phylogenetic Analysis of Spirometra Tapeworms from Snakes in Hunan Province

open access: yesVeterinary Sciences, 2022
Sparganosis is a neglected zoonotic parasitic disease that poses huge threats to humans worldwide. Snakes play an important role in sparganosis transmission because they are the most common second intermediate hosts for Spirometra parasites. However, the

A Cre‐dependent lentiviral vector for neuron subtype‐specific expression of large proteins

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We designed a versatile and modular lentivector comprising a Cre‐dependent switch and self‐cleaving 2A peptide and tested it for co‐expression of GFP and a 2.8 kb gene of interest (GOI) in mouse cortical parvalbumin (PV+) interneurons and midbrain dopamine (TH+) neurons.

A Systematic Review of the Natural Virome of Anopheles Mosquitoes

open access: yesViruses, 2018
Anopheles mosquitoes are vectors of human malaria, but they also harbor viruses, collectively termed the virome. The Anopheles virome is relatively poorly studied, and the number and function of viruses are unknown. Only the o’nyong-nyong arbovirus (ONNV)

Production of germ-free mosquitoes via transient colonisation allows stage-specific investigation of host–microbiota interactions

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Germ-free mosquitoes generated with current methods exhibit developmental deficits. Here, the authors use genetically modified bacteria to allow complete decolonisation at any developmental stage of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and show that bacteria support

Frequency of pyrethroid resistance in human head louse treatment: systematic review and meta-analysis

open access: yesParasite, 2021
Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) are one of the most common insects causing infestations in humans worldwide, and infestation is associated with adverse socio-economic and public health effects. The development of genetic insensitivity (e.g., target
