A Database of Dorsal Hand Vein Images [PDF]
The dorsal hand vein has been demonstrated as a useful biometric for identity verification. This work details the procedure taken to collect two databases of dorsal hand veins in a biometric recognition project. The purpose of this work is to serve as a reference for the databases that are being shared with the public.

UDP‐glucose dehydrogenase variants cause dystroglycanopathy
Abstract UDP‐glucose dehydrogenase (UGDH) variants have been associated with hypotonia, developmental delay, and epilepsy. We report the first pathologic evidence of dystroglycanopathy in siblings with UGDH variants. Both presented around 6 months with developmental delay and elevated creatinine kinase.

Pre-terrestrial origin of rust in the Nakhla meteorite [PDF]
The authors present quantative elemental compositions and summarize textural evidence for the pre-terrestrial origin of rust on the Nakhla meteorite. The material in question is called 'rust' because its phase composition remains unknown.

ABSTRACT Objective To investigate the reliability of very high‐frequency oscillations (VHFOs, 500–2000 Hz) as biomarkers in identifying the epileptogenic zone (EZ) in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) patients. Methods We reviewed 19 MTLE patients who underwent stereo‐electroencephalography‐guided radiofrequency thermocoagulation.

Characterisation and optimisation of foams for varicose vein sclerotherapy [PDF]
In this study we characterise the properties of foams used for varicose vein sclerotherapy. Their effectiveness is evaluated by predicting their yield stress and their flow profiles within a model of a vein. This information is represented using a Bingham number, which also takes into account the foam liquid fraction and the Sauter mean of the bubble ...

Veins Improve Fracture Toughness of Insect Wings
During the lifetime of a flying insect, its wings are subjected to mechanical forces and deformations for millions of cycles. Defects in the micrometre thin membranes or veins may reduce the insect’s flight performance.
