Microplastics and the Endocrine–Metabolic Interface: Novel Diagnostic Tools Targeting Thyroid–Adipose Axis

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Microplastics (MPs) have been identified as major environmental contaminants that can affect organisms directly and act as carriers of particles and chemical additives, thereby aggravating endocrine networks that coordinate metabolic homeostasis.

SURGELLA: A Scoping Review of Impella‐Assisted Hemodynamic Support in High‐Risk Non‐Cardiac Surgery

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
In selected patients with severe LV dysfunction, Impella‐supported non‐cardiac surgery may provide a temporary hemodynamic bridge to otherwise prohibitive procedures. Published evidence remains limited to a small number of highly selected cases, supporting technical feasibility rather than comparative benefit or generalizable safety.

Experimental Extracorporeal Circulation System: A Pilot Study in Rats

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
A miniature extracorporeal circulation (ECC) system was developed for reproducible rodent studies. This system incorporates an integrated heat exchanger and a silicone membrane oxygenator within a double‐lumen circuit, resulting in an ultralow priming volume of < 1.5 mL.

Sudden Unexpected Postnatal Collapse: A Retrospective Cohort Study Describing Incidence, Risk Factors and Role of Perinatal Transition

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim This study aimed to investigate the incidence, risk factors and possible aetiology of sudden unexpected postnatal collapse (SUPC), a potentially fatal yet poorly understood event. Methods In a retrospective cohort, patient records from 483 284 infants born in Stockholm, Sweden, between 2002 and 2022 were screened for SUPC‐related diagnoses.

Metformin attenuates ventilator-induced lung injury

open access: yes, 2012
Introduction: Diabetic patients may develop acute lung injury less often than non-diabetics; a fact that could be partially ascribed to the usage of antidiabetic drugs, including metformin.

Modern Fire Safety Protocols in the Archeological Contexts: A New Tool for Studying the Health and Behavioral Effects of Fire Use in Semi‐Closed Spaces

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study evaluates the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, integrated with controlled fire experiments, to investigate combustion processes in semi‐closed spaces. The framework enables systematic modeling of smoke dispersal, particulate transport, and hearth performance under variable morphologies and ventilation ...

Lung hyperinflation stimulates the release of inflammatory mediators in spontaneously breathing subjects

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 2010
Lung hyperinflation up to vital capacity is used to re-expand collapsed lung areas and to improve gas exchange during general anesthesia. However, it may induce inflammation in normal lungs.

Human brain matters: Navigating the neuropathology of COVID‐19

open access: yesBrain Pathology, EarlyView.
Severe COVID‐19 is associated with vascular dysregulation and chronic neuroinflammation, leading to axonal injury and neurodegeneration. In long COVID or PASC, persistent alterations in neuroimaging and biofluid biomarkers reflect ongoing neuronal damage and neuroinflammation, contributing to long‐term neurological symptoms including fatigue, cognitive
