This is video game play: video games, authority and metacommunication

open access: yesComunicação e Sociedade, 2015
Gregory Bateson claims that all play acts should be primarily understood as meta-communicative. In other words, playing a game implies being able to transmit and receive the meta-message ‘this is play’, which establishes a psychological frame among the players.

Stiffening Liquid Crystal Elastomers with Liquid Crystal Inclusions

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Incorporation of low molecular weight liquid crystals (LC) into liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) leads to a significant increase in their stiffness and output work density. Such remarkable stiffening is attributed to nanoscale phase‐separation and the formation of induced‐smectic domains in polydomain and monodomain LC‐LCEs, respectively.

Self‐Spiking Linear Neuromorphic Soft Pressure Sensor for Underwater Sensing Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a novel design of a neuromorphic pressure sensor that can generate self‐spiking symmetric signals with direct event‐based encoding through the integration of magnetic spheres and alternating coil circuits. The key advantages of this work include high linearity up to 200 kPa (R2 = 0.997), self‐spiking behavior for simplified signal ...

Surfactant Assemblies Directing Chemical Transfer Cascades in Convective Marangoni Flow Pumps

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Convective Marangoni flow pumps allow for chemical transfer cascades amongst droplets that are positioned at the air/water interface. The system comprises of myelins progressing along surface tension gradients, delivering amphiphiles at oil droplets and thereby triggering the emission of emulsified microdroplets, which in turn follow the Marangoni ...
