Vimentin Diversity in Health and Disease [PDF]
Vimentin is a protein that has been linked to a large variety of pathophysiological conditions, including cataracts, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV and cancer. Vimentin has also been shown to regulate a wide spectrum of basic cellular functions. In cells, vimentin assembles into a network of filaments that spans the cytoplasm.

Antibody prepared against chick lens vimentin cross-reacts with chick fibroblast vimentin and with vimentin of mammalian, reptilian, amphibian and fish lenses. This protein is localized in the epithelial and cortical fiber cells and is progressively lost from the deeper cortical cells. It is absent from the nuclear cells.

Abstract The expression of vimentin is developmentally regulated. Analyses of the vimentin gene structure indicate the presence of both positively and negatively regulated elements. In adult tissues, vimentin is mainly expressed in cells of mesenchymal origin.

Tetracycline regulated expression of vimentin in fibroblasts derived from vimentin null mice
Journal of Cell Science, 1997ABSTRACT Fibroblast cell lines were derived from vim−/− mice that express a mouse vimentin transgene in a tetracycline regulatable manner. Vimentin null mouse primary embryo fibroblasts were transformed with SV-40 early genes and vim− cell lines were isolated.

We investigated the presence of antibodies to vimentin in 150 patients awaiting transplant, (50 kidney, 50 liver and 50 thoracic) and in 51 previously transplanted kidney patients whose grafts had failed. Patients with primary end stage thoracic or kidney disease did not have increased levels of vimentin antibodies, but those with primary liver failure
