Mapping opioid exposure through prescription data and postmortem analysis of opioid drugs in multiple tissues

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Background and Purpose Although opioids are central to end of life (EoL) care, tissue‐level opioid exposure remains poorly understood. The objective of this study was to characterize the relationship between prescription‐derived morphine equivalent daily dose (MEDD) and measured morphine concentrations across multiple organs.

Low-frequency drug-resistant HIV-1 and risk of virological failure to first-line NNRTI-based ART: a multicohort European case-control study using centralized ultrasensitive 454 pyrosequencing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Objectives It is still debated if pre-existing minority drug-resistant HIV-1 variants (MVs) affect the virological outcomes of first-line NNRTI-containing ART.

Viral failure and associated factors in adults on second line antiretroviral therapy in public hospitals of Harari Region and Dire Dawa administration, Eastern Ethiopia

open access: yesJournal of Public Health Research
Background: Virological failure in second-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) occurs when HIV patients have a viral load exceeding 1000 copies/ml, presenting significant public health challenges, including increased risk of transmission of HIV, heightened ...

Utility of CD4 cell counts for early prediction of virological failure during antiretroviral therapy in a resource-limited setting

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2008
Background Viral load monitoring is not available for the vast majority of patients receiving antiretroviral therapy in resource-limited settings. However, the practical utility of CD4 cell count measurements as an alternative monitoring strategy has not

Early adherence to antiretroviral medication as a predictor of long-term HIV virological suppression: five-year follow up of an observational cohort. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have demonstrated a cross-sectional relationship between antiretroviral adherence and HIV virological suppression. We assessed the predictive value of baseline adherence in determining long-term virological failure. DESIGN: We

Prioritizing Feasible and Impactful Actions to Enable Secure AI Development and Use in Biology

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As artificial intelligence continues to enhance biological innovation, the potential for misuse must be addressed to fully unlock the potential societal benefits. While significant work has been done to evaluate general‐purpose AI and specialized biological design tools (BDTs) for biothreat creation risks, actionable steps to mitigate the risk

Incidence Rate, Survival Rate, and Predictors for Virological Failure Among Adult TB/HIV Coinfected Clients [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Medicine
Conclusion: The incidence and survival rate of virological failure were high. The current study revealed that male coinfected patients, bedridden functional status, WHO clinical Stage IV, and opportunistic infections other than tuberculosis were ...

RBD‐SD1 Nanoparticle Vaccines From DPP4‐Using Merbecoviruses Elicit a Cross‐Reactive Antibody Response but Limited Cross‐Protective Immunity

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
SpyCatcher‐mi3 nanoparticles displaying RBD‐SD1 from MERS‐CoV, NL140422, and HKU4 elicited robust and cross‐reactive IgG responses in mice. Only MERS‐CoV RBD‐SD1 induced neutralizing antibodies against MERS‐CoV and protected human DPP4 mice from a MERS‐CoV challenge, indicating conserved serologic but limited cross‐neutralizing epitopes.

Drug resistance in HIV patients with virological failure or slow virological response to antiretroviral therapy in Ethiopia [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2014
The ongoing scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in sub-Saharan Africa has prompted the interest in surveillance of transmitted and acquired HIV drug resistance. Resistance data on virological failure and mutations in HIV infected populations initiating treatment in sub-Saharan Africa is sparse.HIV viral load (VL) and resistance mutations pre-ART ...

Virological treatment failure and associated factors among adults on first-line antiretroviral therapy in West Hararghe, Ethiopia

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health
BackgroundVirological failure on first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) remains a major challenge in the management of HIV/AIDS in resource-limited settings, including Ethiopia.
