In a viscous shear damper the seismic mass is chamfered at all its corners. Thus, the clearances between the seismic mass and its casing are gaps with oppositely widening out sections separated by middle sections of smallest widths.

The damping algorithm and design of viscous damper
2019 IEEE 8th International Conference on Fluid Power and Mechatronics (FPM), 2019The energy dissipation mechanism of hydraulic viscous damper was studied considering the shear thinning effect of dimethyl silicone oil. The analysis indicates that most of the energy loss occurs in the damping hole, which is mainly manifested as the damping loss along the path. The calculation formula of damping loss is simplified by assuming boundary

The Extended Theory of the Viscous Vibration Damper
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1955Abstract The paper extends the theory of the Viscous Vibration Damper either tuned or untuned to multimass systems and shows how an optimum damper can be designed for any installation. Special formulas are derived for the two mass plus damper systems.

Torsional Viscous-Friction Dampers
Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1949Abstract This paper describes the large torsional viscous-friction or “Lanchester” dampers manufactured by the author’s company for use on Diesel engines. Some properties of the new silicone fluids, that are necessary for damper design, are given.

Implementation of Structural Control with Viscous Damper
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2011For the sake of safety of structures subjected to abnormal loadings, damper could be one of the effective devices to reduce the responses by the energy dispassion functions. Key points in the process of development and application of damper and aseismatic engineering are narrated.

Rubber/viscous torsional vibration dampers
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1986Tuned rubber/viscous torsional vibration damper assemblies of the kind having a supporting rotor disk mounting an inertia mass coupled to the disk by viscous damping medium and elastic tuning spring, spacing and sealing rubber rings located in rubber ring accommodating grooves. A viscous damping medium working chamber is defined within the inertia mass

The Viscous Torsional Vibration Damper
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1947
THE theory of the untuned viscous damper is developed mathematically here by Mr. O'Connor to show that its characteristics are such as to make practical the use of silicone fluid as a damping medium.

That this type of damper achieves a ...

A New Type of Nonlinear Viscous Damper
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2012In order to satisfy the needs in engineering practice,a new type of nonlinear viscous damper with conical valves is developed. There is a through hole and two valves in the piston of the damper. When the damper work, the fluid flows throw the hole and the regulators, then the energy is consumed.

Self-leveling viscous elastic damper
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1983A self-leveling viscous elastic damper comprising an inner member at least partially received in an outer member and joined to the outer member with an elastomeric shear spring. A main fluid chamber is included in the outer member in communication with a second fluid chamber in the inner member through restricted orifice means.
