Exploring How Eruption Source Parameters Affect Volcanic Radiative Forcing Using Statistical Emulation

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2019
The radiative forcing caused by a volcanic eruption is dependent on several eruption source parameters such as the mass of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emitted, the eruption column height, and the eruption latitude.

Evidence From Microscopy and U–Pb Geochronology as a Clue to the Influence of the Cretaceous Magmatism in the Diagenesis of Pre‐Salt Carbonate Reservoirs in the Santos Basin (Brazil)

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
Carbonates from Santos Basin revealed U–Pb ages correlated with basalt ages (A), suggesting that they were formed during magmatic events. These events placed hot CO2 in the reservoir, which, when mixed with carbonate‐rich cold water (B), led to thermal convection, enabling the formation of the U contained in the carbonates.

Evaluating the structure and magnitude of the ash plume during the initial phase of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption using lidar observations and NAME simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland erupted explosively on 14 April 2010, emitting a plume of ash into the atmosphere. The ash was transported from Iceland toward Europe where mostly cloud-free skies allowed ground-based lidars at Chilbolton in ...

First Observations of Volcanic Eruption Clouds From the L1 Earth‐Sun Lagrange Point by DSCOVR/EPIC

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2018
Volcanic sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions have been measured by ultraviolet sensors on polar‐orbiting satellites for several decades but with limited temporal resolution.

Hydrogen Halide Gas Sensors: Active Materials, Operation Principles, and Emerging Technologies

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Materials, EarlyView.
This review considers hydrogen halide (HX) gas sensors across functional materials and principles: acoustic, chemical, optical and nanophotonic. The strong acidity and reactivity of HX gases are discussed as constraints for stability and selectivity of these devices.

Simulation and observations of stratospheric aerosols from the 2009 Sarychev volcanic eruption [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We used a general circulation model of Earth’s climate to conduct simulations of the 12-16 June 2009 eruption of Sarychev volcano (48.1°N, 153.2°E).

A submarine volcanic eruption leads to a novel microbial habitat

open access: yesNature Ecology &Evolution, 2017
Submarine volcanic eruptions are major catastrophic events that allow investigation of the colonization mechanisms of newly formed seabed. We explored the seafloor after the eruption of the Tagoro submarine volcano off El Hierro Island, Canary ...

The relationship between cellular protein content and selenium accumulation in freshwater microalgae

open access: yesIntegrated Environmental Assessment and Management, EarlyView.
Abstract Variability in the bioconcentration of selenium (Se) by primary producers at the base of the food web results in uncertainty in predictions of bioaccumulation and ecological risk to higher trophic level organisms. Water chemistry, speciation of Se, and periphyton community composition have all been suggested as factors that contribute to ...

Atmospheric Lamb wave pulse and volcanic explosivity index following the 2022 Hunga Tonga (South Pacific) eruption

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2023
The atmospheric Lamb wave induced by the Hunga Tonga (South Pacific) volcanic eruption on 15 January 2022 was recorded as atmospheric pressure fluctuations at various meteorological stations around the globe, and persisted for several days after the ...
