Detection of circulating tumor DNA in colorectal cancer patients using a methylation‐specific droplet digital PCR multiplex

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed a cost‐effective methylation‐specific droplet digital PCR multiplex assay containing tissue‐conserved and tumor‐specific methylation markers. The assay can detect circulating tumor DNA with high accuracy in patients with localized and metastatic colorectal cancer.

Computational modeling of spike generation in serotonergic neurons of the dorsal raphe nucleu [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We consider here a single-compartment model of these neurons which is capable of describing many of the known features of spike generation, particularly the slow rhythmic pacemaking activity often observed in these cells in a variety of species. Included

A nongenomic mechanism for progesterone-mediated immunosuppression: Inhibition of K+ channels, Ca2+ signaling, and gene expression in T lymphocytes [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
The mechanism by which progesterone causes localized suppression of the immune response during pregnancy has remained elusive. Using human T lymphocytes and T cell lines, we show that progesterone, at concentrations found in the placenta, rapidly and ...

Microfluidic electro‐viscoelastic manipulation of extracellular vesicles

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The electro‐viscoelastic manipulation as a potential method for separation of particles based on size. The particles introduced as a sheath flow migrate to the channel center under the influence of simultaneously applied electric field and pressure driven flow.

Human sperm ion channel (dys)function:implications for fertilization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
BACKGROUND: Intensive research on sperm ion channels has identified members of several ion channel families in both mouse and human sperm. Gene knock-out studies have unequivocally demonstrated the importance of the calcium and potassium conductances in ...

Impacts of CACNB4 overexpression on dendritic spine density in both sexes and relevance to schizophrenia

open access: yesTranslational Psychiatry
The voltage-gated calcium channel (VGCC) subunit complex is comprised of the α1 subunit, the ion-permeable channel, and three auxiliary subunits: β, α2δ, and γ.

Diffusion‐based size determination of solute particles: a method adapted for postsynaptic proteins

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We present a diffusion‐based approach for measuring the size of macromolecules and their complexes, and demonstrate its use on postsynaptic proteins. The method requires fluorescein‐labelled protein samples, a microfluidic device that maintains laminar flow for said samples, a microscope recording the emitted fluorescent signals, and an analytic ...

The impact of Hnrnpl deficiency on transcriptional patterns of developing muscle cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We performed nanopore whole‐transcriptome sequencing comparing RNA from Hnrnpl‐knockdown versus control C2C12 myoblasts to investigate the contributions of Hnrnpl to muscle development. Our results indicate that Hnrnpl regulates the expression of genes involved with Notch signaling and skeletal muscle, particularly splicing patterns of specific muscle ...

Mitochondria‐associated membranes (MAMs): molecular organization, cellular functions, and their role in health and disease

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Mitochondria‐associated membranes (MAMs) are contact sites between the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria that regulate calcium signaling, lipid metabolism, autophagy, and stress responses. This review outlines their molecular organization, roles in cellular homeostasis, and how dysfunction drives neurodegeneration, metabolic disease, cancer, and ...

β-adrenergic-mediated dynamic augmentation of sarcolemmal CaV 1.2 clustering and co-operativity in ventricular myocytes. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Key pointsPrevailing dogma holds that activation of the β-adrenergic receptor/cAMP/protein kinase A signalling pathway leads to enhanced L-type CaV 1.2 channel activity, resulting in increased Ca2+ influx into ventricular myocytes and a positive ...
