Terahertz Wave Enhances Permeability of the Voltage-Gated Calcium Channel.
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2021A deficiency of Ca2+ fluxes arising from dysfunctional voltage-gated calcium channels has been associated with a list of calcium channelopathies such as epilepsy, hypokalemic periodic paralysis, episodic ataxia, etc.

The crystal structure of a voltage-gated sodium channel
Voltage-gated sodium (NaV) channels initiate electrical signalling in excitable cells and are the molecular targets for drugs and disease mutations, but the structural basis for their voltage-dependent activation, ion selectivity and drug block is ...

Voltage-gated sodium channels play a key role in the transmission of sensory information about the status of organs in the periphery. Sensory fibers contain a heterogeneous yet specific distribution of voltage-gated sodium channel isoforms. Major efforts by industry and academic groups are underway to develop medicines that interrupt inappropriate ...

Increased knowledge of the molecular diversity of sodium channel alpha- and beta-subunits, and their distribution of expression have been highlights of the past year. The development of subtype-specific channel blockers remains elusive, but the discovery of selective inhibitors such as mu-conotoxins promises useful antagonists in the near future.

Ion channels and the electrical properties they confer on cells are involved in every human characteristic that distinguishes us from the stones in a field. Every perception, thought, movement, and heartbeat depends on electrical signals generated by the activity of ion channels.

How and where simple volatile organic molecules act in the central nervous system to cause loss of consciousness and insensitivity to pain has eluded investigation; yet remarkable progress has been made recently towards identifying possible molecular targets through which the mechanism of anesthesia is tranduced.

This chapter describes the main properties of a voltage-dependent channel presented firstly as a prototype of conducting channels, that is, pore-forming molecules managing transient transmembrane ion fluxes. At resting potential, the voltage sensor adopts a depolarized conformation, and the pore is closed.

Voltage gating of ion channels
Quarterly Reviews of Biophysics, 1994Voltage-gated ion channels are membrane proteins that play a central role in the propagation and transduction of cellular signals (Hille, 1992). Calcium ions entering cells through voltage-gated calcium channels serve as the trigger for neurotransmitter release, muscle contraction, and the release of hormones. Voltage-gated sodium channels initiate the
