Delineating groundwater-surface water exchange flux using temperature-time series analysis methods [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Groundwater-surface water interactions can play a crucial role in river-, riparian and wetland management. Their delineation and quantification at various spatial and temporal scales has become an important aspect in the study of contaminant transport ...

Eddy heat fluxes from direct current measurements of the Antarctic Polar Front in Shag Rocks Passage [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Determining meridional heat flux in the Southern Ocean is critical to the accurate understanding and model simulation of the global ocean. Mesoscale eddies provide a significant but poorly-defined contribution to this transport.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Water Transport in Composite Membranes Containing Silica: Temperature and Relative Humidity Effects

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electrochemical Science, 2011
The aim of this work is to show the water flux across composite proton exchange membranes containing silica and SBA-15 fillers. The experiments were carried out using a gated cell in order to control the temperature and relative humidity (80 to 100 ºC ...

Field survey and analysis of water flux and salinity gradients considering the effects of sea ice coverage and rubber dam: a case study of the Liao River Estuary, China

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
Predicting net river fluxes is important to promote good water quality, maritime transport, and water exchange in estuaries. However, few studies have observed and evaluated net water fluxes to estuaries under complex conditions. This study used advanced

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

A mobile detector for measurements of the atmospheric muon flux in underground sites

open access: yes, 2011
Muons comprise an important contribution of the natural radiation dose in air (approx. 30 nSv/h of a total dose rate of 65-130 nSv/h), as well as in underground sites even when the flux and relative contribution are significantly reduced. The flux of the

Rapid Change in Water Flux Induced by Auxins [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1971
Auxin (indole-3-acetic acid) enhances movement of tritiated water into and out of stem segments of etiolated peas. The time required for water in the tissue to attain one-half equilibrium with water in the surrounding solution is significantly shorter and the initial flux rate is higher in auxin-treated sections.
