Revival Mechanism and Prevention Measures of Composite Landslides: A Case Study of the Wenma Expressway Composite Landslide

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
The resurrection of landslides often occurs in complex strata, where there are often multiple water-resisting zones and weak interlayers. The groundwater level has a significant influence on landslide stability and can lead to the formation of composite ...

Expert opinion: uncertainties in hydraulic roughness [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Water level predictions in rivers are used for a variety of purposes in water management. For example, designing flood defence measures and evaluating natural rehabilitation in flood plains, cannot be done without water level predictions.

Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Testing the Growth Rate Hypothesis in Two Wetland Macrophytes Under Different Water Level and Sediment Type Conditions

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2020
The growth rate hypothesis (GRH) states that a negative correlation exists between the growth rate and N:P and C:P ratios, because fast-growing organisms need relatively more phosphorus-rich RNA to support their high rates of protein synthesis.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Assessment of daily altimeter-based open ocean water level with hindcast and forecast efficiency

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Satellite altimetry water level measurements are valuable in episodic and climate change related hydrodynamic impact studies, despite their sparse temporal distribution over the global ocean.

Stage Monitoring in Turbid Reservoirs with an Inclined Terrestrial Near-Infrared Lidar

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2016
To monitor the stage in turbid reservoirs with a sloping bank, it has been proposed to install a near-infrared Lidar on the bank and to orient it so that it points at the water surface with a large incidence angle (between ≈ 30° and 70°).

Planning drinking water for airplanes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The management of the Dutch national airline company KLM intends to bring a sufficient amount of water on board of all flights to fulfill customer’s demand. On the other hand, the surplus of water after a flight should be kept to a minimum to reduce fuel
