Preparation and Characterization of Electrospun Polysaccharide FucoPol-Based Nanofiber Systems

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2022
The electrospinnability of FucoPol, a bacterial exopolysaccharide, is presented for the first time, evaluated alone and in combination with other polymers, such as polyethylene oxide (PEO) and pullulan.

Melting domain size and recrystallization dynamics of ice revealed by time-resolved x-ray scattering

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
The phase transition between water and ice is ubiquitous and one of the most important phenomena in nature. Here, we performed time-resolved x-ray scattering experiments capturing the melting and recrystallization dynamics of ice.

SAXS/WAXS Investigation of Amyloid-β(16-22) Peptide Nanotubes

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2021
This brief report presents an X-ray scattering investigation of self-assembled nanotubes formed by a short peptide. X-ray scattering methods enable multiscale structural elucidation of these nanotubes in solution under the same conditions involved in the

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Beyond simple small-angle X-ray scattering: developments in online complementary techniques and sample environments

open access: yesIUCrJ, 2014
Small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS, WAXS) are standard tools in materials research. The simultaneous measurement of SAXS and WAXS data in time-resolved studies has gained popularity due to the complementary information obtained.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Rehydration of katoite as a layered double hydroxide: an in situ study

open access: yesRILEM Technical Letters, 2021
Calcium aluminate layered double hydroxides (Ca-Al LDHs) constitute a considerable part of cementitious waste fines. Although cementitious waste fines have proven to be recyclable by thermal treatment at moderate temperatures (400–700 °C), understanding ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.
