Identification and classification of weak layers in the snow
The paper considers the role of vertical snowpack structure for snow avalanche formation and describes the idea of «structural instability». It aims at enhancing the knowledge about transition mechanisms between stable and unstable states of snowpack and

Prediction of Weak Topological Insulators in Layered Semiconductors [PDF]
We report the discovery of weak topological insulators by ab initio calculations in a honeycomb lattice. We propose a structure with an odd number of layers in the primitive unit-cell as a prerequisite for forming weak topological insulators. Here, the single-layered KHgSb is the most suitable candidate for its large bulk energy gap of 0.24 eV.

Layer-adapted meshes for weak boundary layers
We propose a new class of layer-adapted meshes for weak boundary layers. Especially for fourth-order problems these meshes are extremely useful.

Weak localization in few-layer black phosphorus [PDF]
We have conducted a comprehensive investigation into the magneto-transport properties of few-layer black phosphorus in terms of phase coherence length, phase coherence time, and mobility via weak localization measurement and Hall-effect measurement. We present magnetoresistance data showing the weak localization effect in bare p-type few-layer black ...

Validating modeled critical crack length for crack propagation in the snow cover model SNOWPACK [PDF]
Observed snow stratigraphy and snow stability are of key importance for avalanche forecasting. Such observations are rare and snow cover models can improve the spatial and temporal resolution.

Large-ensemble climate simulations to assess changes in snow stability over northern Japan
To examine the influence of global warming including increased heavy snowfall frequency on the potential of natural dry snow avalanche frequency and magnitude, we estimated the frequency of weak layer formation and the associated slab overload above the ...

Study on the Creep and Fracture Evolution Mechanism of Rock Mass with Weak Interlayers
To study the influence of weak interlayers on the creep failure characteristics of rock masses, based on the continuous-discontinuous method (CDEM), the uniaxial compression creep experiments of rock masses containing weak layers were numerically ...
