Wear and wear transition modeling of ceramics

Wear, 1996
Abstract Wear and wear transitions are the major concerns regarding the tribological application of ceramic materials. The objective of this study is to understand wear and wear transition mechanisms of ceramics with emphasis on wear and wear transition prediction. There are four new findings from this research.

Wear and wear transition mechanisms of ceramics

Wear, 1996
Abstract The combination of indentation, inclined-plane sliding, and wear tests provides useful and unique way to investigate ceramic wear and wear transition mechanisms. The experimental results show that wear mechanisms of ceramics are predominantly dependent on the tribological contact stresses.

Role of wear particles in severe–mild wear transition

Wear, 2005
Abstract Severe–mild wear transition is one of the most interesting phenomena in adhesive wear, because the wear rate decreases drastically after the transition. This paper is aimed at clarifying the mechanism of wear mode transition from severe to mild. A copper pin was rubbed against rotating iron disk in laboratory air.

The effects of operating parameters and environment on the wear and wear transition of alumina

Wear, 1996
Systematic wear tests were conducted with varying speeds, loads, temperatures and conditions of lubrication to investigate the influence of the operating parameters and environment on the wear and wear transitions of alumina. Time-dependent wear transition was observed in alumina without any lubrication. Water and paraffin oil significantly reduce wear

On the identification of wear modes and transitions using airborne wear particles

Tribology International, 2013
A novel test method was used to identify how contact conditions influence the wear modes and transitions for sliding steel-on-steel contacts. The test equipment was a pin-on-disc tribometer equipped with instruments for counting airborne particles. The results show that the dominant wear mode significantly influences the number of airborne particles ...

The transition of mild to severe wear of ceramics

Wear, 2004
The transition of mild to severe wear of ceramics depends on the operating conditions (normal load, velocity and temperature) and material properties (like grain size, mechanical and thermal material properties). Adachi et al. [Wear 203¿204 (1997) 291] introduced the transition of mild to severe wear of ceramics by defining a mechanical severity ...

Mild-to-severe wear transition and transition region of oxidative wear in steels

Wear, 2013
Abstract Dry sliding tests for steels were performed in air under the test temperature at 400 °C and the loads of 50–250 N. The wear behavior and characteristics were focused on to explore their general characters in severe conditions. The wear behavior of various steels presented a common wear regular pattern; a mild-to-severe wear transition ...

Influence of hardness of the harder body on wear regime transition in a sliding pair of steels

open access: yesWear, 2009
In the unlubricated sliding wear of steels the mild-severe and severe-mild wear transitions have long been investigated. The effect of system inputs such as normal load, sliding speed, environment humidity and temperature, material properties, among ...
