The Mild-Severe Wear Transition in Erosion Wear

Tribology Letters, 2018
In this study, three types of abrasives and several types of heat treatments and materials were used to obtain 11 different abrasive/material hardness (Ha/Hm) ratios with the aim of elucidating the effect of the Ha/Hm ratio on the mild-severe wear transition in erosion wear.

Extrusion wear and transition of wear mechanisms of steel

Wear, 2008
A pin-on-disc configuration was used for studying the wear mechanisms of steel tested in conditions commonly known as oxidational wear regime. The results show that when the nominal contact pressures on the sliding pairs made of medium carbon steel pin/die steel disc and die steel pin/die steel disc at a sliding velocity of 4 m/s were larger than 5.5 ...

Wear-rate transitions and their relationship to wear mechanisms

Acta Metallurgica, 1987
Abstract This paper is concerned with ways of classifying wear and presenting the information on a wear map. The unlubricated sliding wear of steel is classified into seven elementary mechanisms of material removal. The two principal modes of wear, namely mild and severe wear, provide an alternative but related classification.

Transition of Mild Wear to Severe Wear in Oxidative Wear of H21 Steel

Tribology Letters, 2008
Under atmospheric conditions at 400 °C, we studied the wear mechanism of H21 steel with different tempering states as a function of normal load. Typical oxidative wear was identified by X-ray diffraction patterns with predominant tribo-oxides of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3.

A wear transition mechanism in glass

Wear, 1990
Abstract A wear transition mechanism during sliding in glass has been studied. Disk specimens of soda lime silicate glass were slid against AISI 52100 steel and alumina balls using a three-balls-on-disk configuration. Paraffin oil was used as a lubricant. Microscopic observation of the worn surfaces revealed that semicircular cone-cracks (SCCCs) were

Investigation of a transitional wear model for wear and wear-type rail corrugation prediction

Wear, 2011
In this paper, a recently proposed mechanics-based model for the wear coefficient of rail steels is experimentally validated and implemented to obtain useful predictive wear models for some popular railway steels. The model is then implemented to investigate the feasibility of top of rail (TOR) friction modifiers (FMs) for wear-type rail corrugation ...

Wear and Wear Transition Mechanism in Silicon Carbide during Sliding

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1995
Wear mechanisms in SiC during sliding have been investigated experimentally under paraffin oil lubrication. The wear and friction data indicate that a transition in wear mechanism occurs abruptly after a defined period of sliding. The transition point is reached earlier as load increases.

Wear and Wear Transition in Silicon Carbide Ceramics during Sliding

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1996
Wear and wear transition in silicon carbide ceramics during sliding have been investigated. Three different microstructures, i.e., solid‐state‐sintered silicon carbide, liquidphase‐sintered silicon carbide, and a liquid‐phase‐sintered SiC‐TiB 2 composite, were produced by hot pressing.

Characteristics of Extrusive Wear and Transition of Wear Mechanisms in Elevated-Temperature Wear of a Carbon Steel

Tribology Transactions, 2010
The dry sliding wear of a medium carbon steel with different microstructures was measured under the normal load range of 50–150 N at 400°C by a pin-on-disc high-temperature wear setup. The wear behavior and wear mechanism were systematically studied; in particular, the characteristics of extrusive wear and the transition of wear mechanisms were ...

Wear transition diagram for silicon carbide

Tribology International, 1995
Abstract To obtain information on the tribological behaviour of silicon carbide at elevated temperatures, unlubricated ball-on-flat wear tests were conducted on sintered silicon carbide in self-mated sliding in air. The contact load was varied from 3.2 to 98.0 N, and a temperature range of 23°C to 1000°C was used.
