Carrier-induced refractive index change observed by a whispering gallery mode shift in GaN microrods

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2015
Vertical oriented GaN microrods were grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy with four different n-type carrier concentration sections above 10 ^19 cm ^−3 along the c -axis.

Effect of tapering diameters with microbottle resonator for formaldehyde (CH2O) liquid sensing

open access: yesSensing and Bio-Sensing Research, 2019
In this study, we demonstrate the effect of the microbottle resonator (MBR) based on whispering gallery modes (WGMs) with two different diameters of tapered microfibre and its experiment with the formaldehyde (CH2O) liquid sensor. The MBR with the bottle

Review of biosensing with whispering-gallery mode lasers [PDF]

open access: yesLight: Science & Applications, 2021
AbstractLasers are the pillars of modern optics and sensing. Microlasers based on whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) are miniature in size and have excellent lasing characteristics suitable for biosensing. WGM lasers have been used for label-free detection of single virus particles, detection of molecular electrostatic changes at biointerfaces, and ...

Spherical whispering‐gallery‐mode microresonators

open access: yesLaser & Photonics Reviews, 2010
AbstractWhispering‐gallery modes (WGM) on a spherical surface were first described by Lord Rayleigh at the beginning of the last century, but only after the invention of laser did they start to have some scientific relevance and only during the last two decades there has been a substantial move towards real devices and practical applications.

Acoustic whispering-gallery modes in optomechanical shells

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2012
We numerically calculate the forms and frequencies of mechanical whispering-gallery modes in silica shells. Such modes were recently experimentally observed in water-filled optomechanical resonators, which constitute a bridge between optomechanics and ...

Whispering-gallery modes promote enhanced optical backflow in a perforated dielectric microsphere

open access: yes, 2021
Optical energy flow inside a dielectric microsphere is usually codirected with the optical wavevector. At the same time, if the optical field in a microsphere is in resonance with one of the high-quality spatial eigenmodes (whispering-gallery modes ...

A scatterer‐assisted whispering‐gallery‐mode microprobe

open access: yesNanophotonics, 2018
Abstract A fiber‐based whispering‐gallery‐mode (WGM) microprobe, combining both the high optical field enhancement of the WGMs and the compact structure of the optical fiber, is highly desired for sensing and imaging. Here we report a WGM microsphere resonator coupled to a single‐mode fiber interfaced by a graded‐index lens.

Modal domains and selectivity in large square lasers

open access: yesJournal of Microwaves, Optoelectronics and Electromagnetic Applications
Modes in square resonators have C4v symmetry. A special set of modes in these resonators have odd parities and behave like whispering gallery modes. These quasi-whispering gallery modes have high quality factors and exhibit interesting features.

Shaping Optical Microresonators on the Surface of Optical Fibers With Negative Effective Radius Variations

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2021
We examine moderate CO2 laser heating as a method of forming negative effective radius variations in conventional optical fiber. Fiber samples were subjected to focused CO2 laser radiation in the form of 100 ms pulses with power 0.36 to 1.3 W and ...

Ultrahigh–Q Microtoroid On-Chip Resonators for Low Threshold Microlasers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Recently demonstrated silica toroidal microcavities, as on-chip resonant cavities, become one of the most promising laser resonators due to their exceptional ability to confine optical energy temporarily and spatially (high Q-factor and small mode volume)
