Effects of therapeutically applied whole-body x irradiation were studied on nucleotides and other components of human erythrocytes. Diphosphopyridine nucleotide and triphosphopyridine nucleotide were significantly elevated in the 1- to 4-day period after irradiation. Uric acid was significantly increased 24 hr postirradiation. It can be used with chemotherapy as an "intensive" treatment aiming at the complete eradication of a malignancy--with the resulting bone marrow aplasia needing an autologous or allogeneic transplantation.

Fluid and Sodium Loss in Whole-Body-Irradiated Rats

Whole-body and organ fluid compartment sizes and plasma sodium concentrations were measured in conventional, GI decontaminated, bile duct ligated, and choledochostomized rats at different times after various doses of gamma radiation. In addition, sodium excretion was measured in rats receiving lethal intestinal radiation injury.

Studies were carried out to elucidate the mechanism underlying the impairment in RNA synthesis in the rat thymus after whole-body exposure to X-rays (1000 rad). The ability of thymus nuclei to catalyse RNA polymerization in vitro was adversely affected in irradiated rats.

[Computer-assisted irradiation planning in whole-body irradiation].

SUMMARYThe effects of large doses of whole body irradiation on lymphoid tissues have been studied, with special reference to the normal plasma fell populations of the tissues. Plasma cells were found to be more radioresistant than lymphocytes.After a sublethal dose of 500 r of whole body X‐rays, considerable plasma cell proliferation followed.

Incidence of Cataracts in Rhesus Monkeys Treated with Whole-Body Irradiation

The incidence of cataract formation was investigated in rhesus monkeys exposed to different doses of whole-body irradiation. Application of 850-900 rad (8.5-9 Gy) caused cataracts in 17% of the monkeys within 3 years after treatment; after 10 to 15 years, incidence increased to 100%.

The results of measurements on an Alderson phantom, as well as in-vivo-measurements, on five patients during total body irradiation are described. They were compared with computer-predicted values using the lateral A.P./P.A. irradiation, as used in Tübingen; measurements were carried out by a TLD method.

VIII. Protection of Mice After Whole-Body X Irradiation

Whole-body irradiation of mice with X rays provides a convenient laboratory method for reproducing the principal biological effects of ionizing radiations on man or animals, up to death. Mice of low resistance are killed by a few hundreds of rontgens, and at 800 to 1000 r mortality is 100 per cent although the mice survive for several days.
