Comparative Efficacy of Whole-Brain Radiotherapy Combined with Supplemental Precision Radiotherapy and Whole-Brain Radiotherapy Alone for Brain Metastases

Oncology Treatment Discovery
Objective: To investigate the efficacy of whole-brain radiotherapy combined with supplemental precision radiotherapy compared to whole-brain radiotherapy alone for brain metastasis. Methods: Twenty-six cases of patients with brain metastasis were observed from January 2020 to June 2023.

Whole brain radiotherapy in the treatment of metastatic brain tumors

Seminars in Surgical Oncology, 1998
Previous prospective and retrospective trials have failed to demonstrate the best treatment approach for patients with brain metastases. As a result, fractionated whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) has been the mainstay of treatment for several decades. However, with improved surgical techniques and the advent of radiosurgical procedures to treat single ...

Shorter-Course Whole-Brain Radiotherapy for Brain Metastases in Elderly Patients

International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, 2011
Many patients with brain metastases receive whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) alone. Using 10 × 3 Gy in 2 weeks is the standard regimen in most centers. Regarding the extraordinarily poor survival prognosis of elderly patients with multiple brain metastases, a shorter WBRT regimen would be preferable.

Radiosurgery for brain metastases: is whole brain radiotherapy necessary?

International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics, 1999
Because whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) may cause dementia in long-term survivors, selected patients with brain metastases may benefit from initial treatment with radiosurgery (RS) alone reserving WBRT for salvage as needed. We reviewed results of RS +/- WBRT in patients with newly diagnosed brain metastasis to provide background for a prospective ...

Influence of Whole-Brain Radiotherapy on Remission of Brain Metastases

Journal of Clinical Oncology, 2006
TO THE EDITOR: Schwab et al reported an intriguing therapeutic benefit in a female nonsmoker with multiple brain metastases from lung adenocarcinoma treated with gefitinib 250 mg daily 3 years after thoracic surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. Gefitinib treatment was initiated 6 weeks after whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) with 36 Gy because of a lack of

Whole-Brain Radiotherapy Combined with Surgery or Stereotactic Radiotherapy in Patients with Brain Oligometastases

Strahlentherapie und Onkologie, 2011
To verify whether the treatment of brain oligometastases with whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) plus stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) or surgical resection results in different outcomes.Files of patients affected by brain metastases submitted to surgical resection followed by WBRT (group A) or WBRT + SRT (group B) were retrospectively selected for this ...

Is Whole Brain Radiotherapy Beneficial for Patients with Brain Metastases?

2011
Whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) has been commonly used since the 1950s in the management of brain metastases. The overall survival rate after WBRT alone is between two and six months and it has not improved over time. The improvement of survival with the use of WBRT has never been demonstrated in the prospective trials.

Hippocampal-Sparing Whole-Brain Radiotherapy for Lung Cancer

Clinical Lung Cancer, 2017
Brain metastases occur in 20% to 40% of lung cancer patients. Whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) has long been considered the treatment of choice for many patients with lung cancer, because of its wide availability, ease of delivery, and effectiveness in prolonging survival.

Automatic planning on hippocampal avoidance whole-brain radiotherapy

Medical Dosimetry, 2017
Mounting evidence suggests that radiation-induced damage to the hippocampus plays a role in neurocognitive decline for patients receiving whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT). Hippocampal avoidance whole-brain radiotherapy (HA-WBRT) has been proposed to reduce the putative neurocognitive deficits by limiting the dose to the hippocampus.

Whole Brain Radiotherapy (WBRT) for Brain Metastases

2019
WBRT was the historical reference in the management of metastatic patients with brain metastases (BMs) both acting as a palliative tool for symptomatic patients and also by effectively preventing the risk of developing new BMs, including the postoperative setting [1]. To be noted and until the early 2000s, median overall survival (OS) of these patients
