The wooden breast myopathy is identified by the palpation of a rigid pectoralis major muscle and results in myofiber necrosis and fibrosis in fast-growing, meat-type broilers. The fibrosis in wooden breast-affected muscle is characterized by the replacement of myofibers with extracellular matrix proteins, especially fibril-forming collagens.
