Secular Trends of Fast-Food Consumption Among Adolescents Aged 12–15 Years: A Global Analysis Including 18 Countries

open access: yesAdvances in Public Health
Consumption of fast-food in adolescence is detrimental to mental and physical health. However, data on the temporal trends of fast-food consumption in this population are scarce, particularly from non-Western or non-high-income settings.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Healthy communities: frequent GP attenders and their use of health services in 2012–13 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
More than one-third of Australians (35.3%) went to a GP six or more times in 2012–13, and those who went most often tended to be older and less wealthy, were more likely to have several long-term health conditions and were more likely to see several ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Exploring the process by which positive racial identity develops and influences academic performance in Black youth: Implications for social work

open access: yes, 2019
Although racial-ethnic socialization and racial-ethnic identity interlink to influence youth's developmental outcomes, the extant research has tended to investigate these constructs and their effect on youths’ outcomes separately.

The contemporary quarrel between performance and literature : reflections on performance (and) philosophy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This article argues for an understanding of performance as being motivated by a principle of autotelicity that suspends all considerations other than those of the performance itself as it unfolds in creative free play.

Toe-In and Toe-Out Walking Patterns and Lateral Wedge Insoles: A Musculoskeletal Simulation and Probabilistic Modelling Assessment of Medial Tibiofemoral Cartilage Mechanics

open access: yesLife
This study examined lateral wedge insoles and altered foot progression angles on medial tibiofemoral loading and long-term cartilage failure risk. Fifteen healthy male participants walked under four conditions: neutral gait, lateral wedge insoles, toe-in

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
