MHz X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy using an acoustic levitator at the European XFEL

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation
The structural and dynamical properties of soft-matter systems play an important role in crystallization and nucleation theory. Despite their significance, the dynamical properties are still poorly understood because of experimental constraints and the ...

Using diffraction losses of X-rays in a single crystal for determination of its lattice parameters as well as for monochromator calibration

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, 2022
A way has been developed to measure the unit-cell parameters of a single crystal just from an energy scan with X-rays, even when the exact energy of the X-rays is not well defined due to an error in the pitch angle of the monochromator.

Dominant Secondary Nuclear Photoexcitation with the X-ray Free Electron Laser

open access: yes, 2014
The new regime of resonant nuclear photoexcitation rendered possible by x-ray free electron laser beams interacting with solid state targets is investigated theoretically.

Operation of Photo Electron Spectrometers for Non-Invasive Photon Diagnostics at the European X-Ray Free Electron Laser

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Angle-resolved photoelectron spectrometers with microchannel plate detectors and fast digitizer electronics are versatile and powerful devices for providing non-invasive single-shot photon diagnostics at a MHz repetition rate X-ray free-electron lasers ...

Chirped seeded free-electron lasers: self-standing light sources for two-colour pump-probe experiments

open access: yes, 2012
We demonstrate the possibility to run a single-pass free-electron laser in a new dynamical regime, which can be exploited to perform two-colour pump-probe experiments in the VUV/X-ray domain, using the free-electron laser emission both as a pump and as a

X-ray free electron laser: opportunities for drug discovery [PDF]

open access: yesEssays in Biochemistry, 2017
Past decades have shown the impact of structural information derived from complexes of drug candidates with their protein targets to facilitate the discovery of safe and effective medicines. Despite recent developments in single particle cryo-electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography has been the main method to derive structural information.

Novel correction procedure for compensating thermal contraction errors in the measurement of the magnetic field of superconducting undulator coils in a liquid helium cryostat

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation
Superconducting undulators (SCUs) can offer a much higher on-axis undulator field than state-of-the-art cryogenic permanent-magnet undulators with the same period and vacuum gap.

X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy of protein dynamics at nearly diffraction-limited storage rings

open access: yesIUCrJ, 2019
This study explores the possibility of measuring the dynamics of proteins in solution using X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) at nearly diffraction-limited storage rings (DLSRs). We calculate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of XPCS experiments

Quantum Effects with an X-Ray Free-Electron Laser [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2002
A quantum kinetic equation coupled with Maxwell's equation is used to estimate the laser power required at an XFEL facility to expose intrinsically quantum effects in the process of QED vacuum decay via spontaneous pair production. A 9 TW-peak XFEL laser with photon energy 8.3 keV could be sufficient to initiate particle accumulation and the consequent
