Xanthine Oxidoreductase Inhibitors
2020Xanthine oxidase inhibitors are primarily used in the clinical prevention and treatment of gout associated with hyperuricemia. The archetypal xanthine oxidase inhibitor, Allopurinol has been shown to have other beneficial effects such as a reduction in vascular reactive oxygen species and mechano-energetic uncoupling.

Allopurinol and Xanthine Nephropathy
New England Journal of Medicine, 1970Treatment with allopurinol results in an induced xanthinuria. Allopurinol inhibits xanthine oxidase, the enzyme that catalyzes oxidation of hypoxanthine to xanthine and of xanthine to uric acid,1 a...

Xanthines (Caffeine) and Nicotine
1989This chapter deals with the most culturally accepted legal drugs. As might be expected, these relatively mild (per usual dose) and highly attractive psychoactive substances have the widest use in our society. Despite the relatively benign effects that can be expected at low doses, the high prevalence of use results in frequent morbidity and (for ...

Electrochemical Determination of Xanthine Oxidase-Catalyzed Oxidation of Xanthine
Analytical Letters, 1976Abstract A rapid electrochemical (chronoamperometric) method for the determination of xanthine oxidase catalyzed oxidation of xanthine and hypoxanthine is described. The assay is based on the anodic oxidation of the product, uric acid, at a stationary carbon paste electrode.

The observation of a weak reddish fluorescence to ultraviolet light at 253 nm wave length in a chromatographic plate destined to identify purine bases contained in a vesical calculus of V.Y. (11-7), member of our second family of hereditary xanthinuria,1, made us suspect the presence of porphyrins or of pharmacological agents adsorbed by the purines ...
