Plant cells are surrounded by a rigid wall made up of cellulose microfibrils, pectins, hemicelluloses, and lignin. This cell wall provides structure and protection for plant cells. In grasses and in dicot secondary cell walls, the major hemicellulose is a polymer of β-(1,4)-linked xylose units called xylan.

The increasing accumulation of plastic waste has brought serious environmental issues. Biodegradable plastics are promising candidates to solve the problem but still remain a scientific challenge. Here, xylan plastic (XP) was fabricated by a strategy of double cross-linking through etherification combined with hot pressing.

The availability of xylan-type polysaccharides, representing an immense resource of biopolymers for practical application, is summarized. Xylans constitute 25–35% of the dry biomass of woody tissues of dicots and lignified tissues of monocots and occur up to 50% in some tissues of cereal grains.

Xylan-degrading activity in yeasts: Growth on xylose, xylan and hemicelluloses
Folia Microbiologica, 1978The ability to grow in liquid media with D-xylose, xylan from decidous trees, and hemicelluloses from conifers was tested in 95 strains of 35 genera of yeasts and yeast-like organisms. Of 54 strains thriving on xylose, only 13 (genera Aureobasidium, Cryptococcus and Trichosporon) utilized xylan and hemicelluloses as growth substrates.

The Xylan of Rhodymenia palmata
Nature, 1950Barry and Dillon1 reported the isolation from the red seaweed Rhodymenia palmata of a polysaccharide which gave D-xylose on hydrolysis. Our special interest in xylans2 has led us to investigate this substance more fully as part of the research programme of the Scottish Seaweed Research Association.

Functionalized xylans in the production of xylan-coated paper laminates
Reactive and Functional Polymers, 2017Abstract Two functionalized xylans, namely a carboxymethyl xylan (CMX) and a 2-dodecenyl succinic anhydride-modified xylan (X-2-DSA) were, i) synthesized from beechwood xylan (BX) and characterized for their structural properties, thermal behaviour and molar mass and, ii) used in the production of paper/xylan laminates for food packaging.

Xylan was 2-hydroxypropylsulfonated and/or 2-hydroxypropylquaternized for film application. All the products were water soluble with molar masses of the derivatives between Mn of 3.8 and 948.9 kg/mol with polydispersity index D from 1.7 to 26.8. At the range from 100 to 250 ?m of thickness the material developed reproducible mechanical properties. When
