The slow combustion of the isomeric xylenes II—Ortho-xylene
Combustion and Flame, 1968Ortho-xylene has been shown to possess a much greater degree of reactivity towards oxygen than its isomers meta- and para-xylene. Under identical conditions, it exhibited a maximum reaction rate of the order of ten times that observed for the less reactive isomers.

Xylene is widely used in medical technology, but there are many concerns about its safety. A 52-year-old woman, employed as a histotechnician, presented with burning, swollen hands. Patch testing and a visit to her place of work confirmed exposure and sensitivity, in the form of contact urticaria, to xylene.

Excess volumes and excess enthalpies of triethylamine + o-xylene, +m-xylene, and +p-xylene
The Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics, 1982Abstract Densities at 293.15, 303.15, 313.15, and 323.15 K and excess enthalpies at 293.15, 303.15, and 313.15 K have been measured for triethylamine + o-xylene, + m-xylene, and + p-xylene. The excess volumes VE are found to be negative and the values of VE decrease with increase of temperature.

Abstract Isobaric vapour–liquid equilibria were measured for the binary systems {n-heptane + (o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene or ethylbenzene)} at 101.3 kPa using a dynamic method with circulation in both phases. In thermodynamic calculations using the data, the vapour phase was considered to be non-ideal, and activity coefficients of the components in ...

The slow combustion of the isomeric xylenes I—Meta- and para-xylene
Combustion and Flame, 1968Experimental results concerning the slow combustion of meta- and para-xylene in the temperature range 460° to 512°C have shown the almost identical behaviour of these two isomers. Kinetic dependences and oxidation products observed in the present work have indicated that this similarity of behaviour extends to the basic mechanism responsible for ...

Many studies have reported high p-xylene/o-xylene permselectivities with MFI zeolite membranes; however, these results were obtained at low xylene activity (

Abstract Excess volumes have been redetermined for o -xylene +, m -xylene +, p -xylene +, and ethylbenzene + carbon tetrachloride over the complete mole fraction range and at 303.15 K. The results support the presence of specific interactions between the components.

Separation of para-xylene from xylene mixture via crystallization
Chemical Engineering and Processing: Process Intensification, 2007Crystallization kinetics of para-xylene from xylene isomers mixture using a lab-scale cooling batch crystallizer were determined. The cooling batch crystallizer type is simple, flexible and requires less process development. Dynamic mass and population balances were used to model the batch crystallizer.
