Fluids in cosmology

open access: yes, 2013
We review the role of fluids in cosmology by first introducing them in General Relativity and then by applying them to a FRW Universe's model. We describe how relativistic and non-relativistic components evolve in the background dynamics.

A hyperbolic model of chemotaxis on a network: a numerical study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In this paper we deal with a semilinear hyperbolic chemotaxis model in one space dimension evolving on a network, with suitable transmission conditions at nodes. This framework is motivated by tissue-engineering scaffolds used for improving wound healing.

Photosynthesis under far‐red light—evolutionary adaptations and bioengineering of light‐harvesting complexes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phototrophs evolved light‐harvesting systems adapted for efficient photon capture in habitats enriched in far‐red radiation. A subset of eukaryotic pigment‐binding proteins can absorb far‐red photons via low‐energy chlorophyll states known as red forms.

Overexpression of beta-carotene hydroxylase enhances stress tolerance in Arabidopsis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Plant stress caused by extreme environmental conditions is already a principal reason for yield reduction in crops. The threat of global environment change makes it increasingly important to generate crop plants that will withstand such conditions ...

Engineering for Higher Yields

open access: yes, 2015
It was difficult for me to understand the meaning of "engineering" as used in the title of my speech. I asked Dr. Haskins who told me that the term engineering is used here because one traditional role of the engineer has been the application of scientific principles in the solution of practical problems, and that in this case we want to consider the ...

Developing Genetic Engineering Techniques for Control of Seed Size and Yield

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2022
Many signaling pathways regulate seed size through the development of endosperm and maternal tissues, which ultimately results in a range of variations in seed size or weight. Seed size can be determined through the development of zygotic tissues (endosperm and embryo) and maternal ovules. In addition, in some species such as rice, seed size is largely

Rad27/FEN1 prevents accumulation of Okazaki fragments and ribosomal DNA copy number changes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The budding yeast Rad27 is a structure‐specific endonuclease. Here, the authors reveal that Rad27 is crucial for maintaining the stability of the ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) region. Rad27 deficiency leads to the accumulation of Okazaki fragments and changes in rDNA copy number.

Antimicrobial resistance: a biopsychosocial problem requiring innovative interdisciplinary and imaginative interventions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
To date, antimicrobials have been understood through largely biomedical perspectives. There has been a tendency to focus upon the effectiveness of pharmaceuticals within individual bodies.

Parameterizing the Supernova Engine and Its Effect on Remnants and Basic Yields [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2018
Abstract Core-collapse supernova science is now entering an era in which engine models are beginning to make both qualitative and, in some cases, quantitative predictions. Although the evidence in support of the convective engine for core-collapse supernova continues to grow, it is difficult to place quantitative constraints on this ...
