Biochemical characterization of Yin Yang 1 – RNA complexes
Biochemistry and Cell Biology, 2008YY1 (Yin Yang 1) is present in the Xenopus oocyte cytoplasm as a constituent of messenger ribonucleoprotein complexes (mRNPs). Association of YY1 with mRNPs requires direct RNA-binding activity. Previously, we have shown YY1 has a high affinity for U-rich RNA; however, potential interactions with plausible in vivo targets have not been investigated ...

The yin and yang of cortical layer 1
Nature Neuroscience, 2013Matthew Larkum discusses the results of a large-scale patch-clamp study revealing the existence of two new cortical microcircuits. These circuits both originate in layer I and either inhibit or disinhibit layer V pyramidal cells.

Yin Yang-1(YY-1) expression in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Journal of Receptors and Signal Transduction, 2011Yin Yang-1 (YY-1) is implicated in the pathogenesis of lung cancer which can be complicated with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).The aim of the study was to investigate whether YY-1 is involved in the pathogenesis of IPF and whether represents a common pathogenetic pathway which could explain the coexistence of these disorders.Lung tissue from 52 ...

Yin Yang 1 Expression and Localisation in Quadriceps Muscle in COPD
Archivos de Bronconeumología (English Edition), 2011Yin Yang 1 (YY1) is a transcriptional repressor that inhibits muscle gene expression and myogenesis. YY1 has not previously been investigated in the skeletal muscle of patients with COPD. The aims of this study were to investigate YY1 expression and localisation in the quadriceps muscle of COPD patients compared to healthy age-matched controls, and ...

Expression of transcription factor Yin Yang 1 in human osteosarcomas
European Journal of Cancer, 2006The transcription factor Yin Yang 1 (YY1) is known to be present in some human cancer cell lines and its expression correlates with immune-mediated apoptosis. By using Western blot analysis, we have shown that the YY1 protein is strongly expressed in human osteosarcoma cells and localised mainly in the nucleus.

The yin and yang of E2F-1: balancing life and death
Nature Cell Biology, 2003E2F transcription factors coordinate the timely expression of genes during early cell-cycle progression. In addition, the E2F-1 subunit can induce apoptosis in response to DNA damage. New results reveal an unexpected function for E2F-1 in suppressing apoptosis, which may be important in explaining the contribution of E2F-1 to tumorigenesis.

Physical Interaction of Human Yin Yang 1 Protein with DNA
Critical Reviews™ in Oncogenesis, 2017Yin Yang 1 (YY1)'s interaction with DNA can result in various, even contradicting, effects on transcription in the form of initiation, activation, or repression. This surprising activity can be explained in the context of the YY1-DNA's complex structure. YY1's DNA-binding domain is formed by four zinc finger motifs.

Expression of transcription factor Yin Yang 1 in prostate cancer
International Journal of Oncology, 2005The transcription repressor Yin Yang 1 (YY1) is expressed in several human cancer cell lines and its expression correlates with resistance to immune-mediated apoptosis. This study used tissue microarrays to investigate the expression and localization of YY1 in 1364 representative tissue samples from 246 hormone naive prostate cancer patients who ...

Yin Yang 1 Promotes p53 Degradation
Science's STKE, 2004Yin yang 1 (YY1) is a transcriptional regulator, and knockout of this protein in mice causes embryonic death at the time of implantation, a stage when there is rapid cell proliferation. Sui et al. used cultured cells to study the mechanism by which YY1 may regulate cell proliferation and found that chicken DT40 ...
