Signatures of Selection for Environmental Adaptation and Zebu × Taurine Hybrid Fitness in East African Shorthorn Zebu [PDF]
The East African Shorthorn Zebu (EASZ) cattle are ancient hybrid between Asian zebu × African taurine cattle preferred by local farmers due to their adaptability to the African environment.

Follicular dynamics in zebu cattle [PDF]
The aim of this study was to investigate the follicular dynamics during estrous cycle in Gir breed (Bos indicus) cows. Follicular growth and atresia during estrous cycle were evaluated using a portable ultrasound device. Luteal activity was evaluated by serum progesterone levels.

Body Weight Estimation in Holstein × Zebu Crossbred Heifers: Comparative Analysis of XGBoost and LightGBM Algorithms. [PDF]
This study evaluated the effectiveness of XGBoost and LightGBM algorithms for the purpose of live weight estimation in Holstein × Zebu crossbred heifers. In the analysis performed with a large biometric dataset, both models provided high accuracy, with the XGBoost algorithm standing out with R2 = 0.999 in the training set and R2 = 0.986 in the test set.

Energy metabolism of pregnant zebu and crossbred zebu dairy cattle
The purpose of this study was to determine the energy partition of pregnant F1 Holstein x Gyr with average initial body weight (BW) of 515.6 kg and Gyr cows with average initial BW of 435.1 kg at 180, 210 and 240 days of gestation, obtained using respirometry. Twelve animals in two groups (six per genetic group) received a restricted diet equivalent to

Fully Phased Population-Prevalent East African Cattle BoLA-I Alleles Determined Using PacBio HiFi Long-Read Sequencing Represent Five Novel Specificities With Distinctive Peptide Binding Potential. [PDF]
ABSTRACT Due to factors such as lower biosecurity, greater wildlife/farm animal interfaces, and environmental challenges, cattle in sub‐Saharan Africa are exposed to more diverse and intensive bacterial, viral and protozoan pathogen challenges than cattle in Europe and other high‐income regions of the world.

The Vertebrate Breed Ontology: Toward Effective Breed Data Standardization. [PDF]
ABSTRACT Background Limited universally‐adopted data standards in veterinary medicine hinder data interoperability and therefore integration and comparison; this ultimately impedes the application of existing information‐based tools to support advancement in diagnostics, treatments, and precision medicine.

Comparative Evaluation of a Locally Formulated Subclinical Mastitis Test Reagent Against the California Mastitis Test (CMT) in Dairy Cows in Ethiopia. [PDF]
A novel Ethiopian mastitis test (EMT), made from local ingredients, was evaluated against the gold‐standard CMT for detecting subclinical mastitis in dairy cows. EMT showed 90.14% sensitivity, 100% specificity and strong agreement (κ = 0.87) with CMT. It offers a cost‐effective, accessible and field‐adaptable solution.
