Forest Heterogeneity by Chain Saw: How Between‐Patch Variation in Old Growth Attributes Changes the Metacommunities of Beetles

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 29, Issue 3, March 2026.
Metacommunity theory has expanded our understanding of how spatial dynamics and local interactions influence species communities, but we lack empirical studies specifically in terrestrial habitats testing which archetype is most important. In a replicated design we experimentally enhanced structural between‐patch heterogeneity in homogeneous production

Leaving to Return: A Photographic Case Study in Western Canada

open access: yes, 2016
| Adopting a collaborative framework, this paper utilizes Thomas Gardiner’s project Western Canada (2005-2010) as a catalyst for exploring the concept of a photographic community in the Canadian West.

Experimental methods in chemical engineering: Electrospinning

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, Volume 104, Issue 2, Page 556-568, February 2026.
Abstract Electrospinning produces micro‐ and nanofibres by forcing a polymeric solution through a fine needle in an electric field that produces a filament that accumulates onto a collector plate. The fibre morphology depends on solution properties, distance between needle and plate, feed rate, and electric field intensity.

Protected Areas Have Not Halted Macrophyte Biodiversity Loss and Eutrophication in Northwest German Standing Waters

open access: yesJournal of Vegetation Science, Volume 37, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
Since the mid‐20th century, mean site‐level macrophyte richness declined by more than a quarter across 119 standing waters of various types in northwest Germany. Within protected areas, richness was consistently higher but declined at similar rates. Communities shifted towards eutrophic‐hypertrophic indicators, underscoring the need for catchment‐wide ...

Too good to be true: pitfalls of usingmean Ellenberg indicator values in vegetation analyses

open access: yes, 2012
Question: Mean Ellenberg indicator values (EIVs) inherit information about compositional similarity, because during their calculation species abundances (or presence–absences) are used as weights.

Prediction of wheat and flour Zeleny sedimentation value using NIR technique.

open access: yesCzech Journal of Food Sciences, 2003
Analytical quality parameters of wheat flour prepared from variety and commercial wheat samples (wheat harvest 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001) were assessed by means of filter spectrograph Inframatic 8620 ASH (moisture and protein content) and Sedi-tester ...

Modeling of magnetic properties of A2BB′O6 compounds using ab initio and Monte Carlo methods

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 108, Issue 12, December 2025.
Ab initio and Monte Carlo simulations were employed to maximize the estimated Curie temperature of A2BB′O6 oxides. It was revealed that the element A ion radius should be as small as possible, while the magnetic moments of B and B′ elements should be as large as possible.
