Neutrophil-derived defensins as modulators of innate immune function
Cationic host defence peptides are an evolutionarily conserved component of the immune system and have been found across a wide variety of species. In lower organisms they comprise a major component of the defensive repertoire, whereas in higher species ...

Pantethine Restores Epidermal Homeostasis and Modulates Vesicle‐Associated Proteins in Psoriasis
Pantethine attenuates psoriasis‐like epidermal pathology in a full‐thickness 3D human skin model by modulating inflammatory, oxidative‐stress, differentiation and tissue‐remodelling responses, alongside changes in vesicle‐associated proteins. These findings support restoration of epidermal homeostasis, although direct effects on extracellular vesicles ...

Alcohol activates JNK2, leading to epithelial TJ disruption. Corticosterone activates JNK2 and causes Paneth cell dysfunction. Depletion of α‐defensins due to Paneth cell dysfunction causes gut microbiota dysbiosis. Microbiota dysbiosis and TJ disruption lead to endotoxemia, systemic inflammation, and liver damage.

Alpha-defensins in the prevention of HIV transmission among breastfed infants
α-Defensins have been observed to have anti-HIV activity but have not been investigated in relation to mother-to-child HIV transmission. We measured the concentration of α-defensins in breast milk of HIV-positive mothers and tested whether the ...

From Dysbiosis to Disease: How Vaginal Microbiota Shape Group B Streptococcus Pathogenesis
Lactobacillus crispatus plays a critical role in the vaginal microbiome. Limiting glucose shifts metabolism toward HMO consumption and amino acid metabolism. These actions enable alkali production and competition. Homeostasis, characterized by dense Lactobacilli colonization and suppression of pathogens, provides resistance to dysbiosis.

Background Defensins are small cationic peptides with antibacterial activity expressed only in Paneth cells (α-defensins) or generally in intestinal epithelial cells (β-defensins) that have a profound effect on gut microbiota. We have recently shown that

Role of defensins in the pathogenesis of chronic lung allograft rejection [PDF]
Chronic rejection predominantly manifested as bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), still remains a major problem affecting long-term outcomes in human lung transplantation (LTx).

Anti-inflammatory mechanisms of the neutrophilreleased antimicrobial peptide α-defensins [PDF]
Tissue homeostasis is necessary for optimal organ functioning. The onset of tissue trauma compromises the homeostatic environment resulting in widespread cell death with the likelihood of exposure to invading micro-organisms.
