Translating 5-HT receptor pharmacology.
Neurogastroenterology and motility, 2010Since metoclopramide was first described (in 1964) there have been several attempts to develop compounds which retained gastrointestinal prokinetic activity (via 5-HT(4) receptor activation) but without the limiting side effects associated with dopamine D(2) receptor antagonism.

MDP and 5-HT receptors. Does MDP interact with 5-HT(7) receptors?
International journal of immunopharmacology, 2000A possible interaction of immunomodulator muramyl dipeptide (MDP) with 5-HT(7) (5-hydroxytryptamine) receptors was investigated. The activation of 5-HT(7) receptors relaxes the guinea-pig distal ileum. The whole ileum segments were, therefore, cut and placed into the bath.

Neuronal 5-HT receptors in the periphery
Neuropharmacology, 19845-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) induces responses in neurones from all branches of the mammalian peripheral nervous system. Responses may be excitatory or inhibitory and are mediated through at least four distinct receptor sites. One receptor mediates excitation in motoneurones and preganglionic sympathetic neurones and can be designated a D (or possibly 5 ...

Discriminating between 5-HT₃A and 5-HT₃AB receptors.
British journal of pharmacology, 2014The 5-HT3B subunit was first cloned in 1999, and co-expression with the 5-HT3A subunit results in heteromeric 5-HT₃AB receptors that are functionally distinct from homomeric 5-HT₃A receptors. The affinities of competitive ligands at the two receptor subtypes are usually similar, but those of non-competitive antagonists that bind in the pore often ...

Migraine is a vascular headache but its pathophysiology is complex and multifactorial. Of the many pathophysiological factors that are implicated in migraine, changes in the metabolism of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) are the best documented. During the headache phase of migraine, urinary excretion of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid increases, whereas the ...
