Influence of Test Temperature and Test Frequency on Fatigue Life of Aluminum Alloy EN AW‐2618A

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of test temperature and test frequency on the fatigue life of EN AW‐2618A is investigated. High‐cycle fatigue tests are performed at different test temperatures and frequencies on the 1000 h/230°C overaged state. Both test parameters reduce fatigue life due to time‐dependent damage mechanisms.

High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Feasibility of Nitrogen as a Carrier Gas for Inconel Cold Spray in Hydropower Application

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
N2, despite being nearly two orders of magnitude cheaper than He, is a feasible carrier gas for cold spray Inconel coatings in hydropower repair applications when higher gas temperature and pressure are used. Reducing powder size significantly improved cavitation resistance, while the addition of fine chromium carbide particles further enhanced erosion

Social Vulnerability and Long‐Term Cardiovascular Outcomes After COVID‐19 Hospitalization: An Analysis of the American Heart Association COVID‐19 Registry Linked With Medicare Claims Data

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease
Background Patients hospitalized with COVID‐19 from socioeconomically vulnerable communities are at risk for in‐hospital cardiovascular events. However, the association of socioeconomic vulnerability and outcomes after hospitalization is uncertain ...

SMITH AT 300: SMITH ON EMPATHY AND SYMPATHY

open access: yes, 2023
Smith at 300: Contribution by Philippe Fontaine"For the twenty-first-century student of sympathy, the excerpt above is an obvious reminder that the history of ideas is not just a history of words. Empathy does not appear in that passage, nor in TMS in general, which has often caused confusion among commentators, and yet the “imaginary change of ...

Chiral Phase Change Nanomaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates reversible, non‐volatile phase transitions in chiral Ge2${\rm Ge}_2$Sb2${\rm Sb}_2$Te5${\rm Te}_5$ (GST) nanohelices for high‐speed optical modulation of chirality and dynamic control of the state of polarization (SOP). The chiral nanostructures are fabricated using a highly directional, wafer‐scale physical vapor deposition ...

Envisioning Climate Justice with Smith Students

open access: yes, 2023
Smith College has taken initiatives to increase on-campus sustainability in the face of the climate crisis, but there is work to be done to incorporate justice into these solutions.

A Molecular Shielding Strategy to Develop Low Protein Binding, Renal Clearable Pan‐Cancer Near‐Infrared Probes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A molecular shielding strategy to convert “protein‐sticky” and “non‐tumor specific” clinical ICG dye, into a “low protein binding” and “tumor‐targeting” dye with prolonged blood circulation and renal clearance is described. These shielded ICGs demonstrate strong tumor accumulation and optimal tissue clearance, resulting in high tumor‐to‐background ...

Electrolyte‐Induced Cu+ Preservation Results in a Selectivity Switch of Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction at a Copper‐Organic Framework as Electrocatalyst

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The active role of KCl as a neutral electrolyte enables switching the selectivity on a Cu organic framework from C1 to C2+ products during electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. ABSTRACT We introduce a copper‐nicotinate (Cu‐NA) framework as a halogenide‐stabilized Cu+/Cu0 pre‐catalyst for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction with high C2+ selectivity in a “neutral”

Evaluating Flood Risks at Smith College in Relation to Northampton

open access: yes, 2022
Climate change is causing a steady increase in atmospheric temperature, causing more frequent and intense storms for vulnerable areas. As a result, floods will be higher and reach farther inland, increasing the risk of property damage and loss of life ...
