Nanothermometry in Living Cells: Physical Limits, Conceptual and Material Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Heat and temperature are fundamental to life. When nanothermometers began probing regions as small as a living cell, they triggered controversial claims of large intracellular temperature gradients. We review physical constraints energy‐conservation, entropy production, thermodynamic fluctuations, and molecular dynamics.

Fabrication of Pyridinic Nitrogen‐Functionalized Carbon Cloth for High‐Performance Iron‐Chromium Flow Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The carbon cloth electrode with targeted pyridinic nitrogen doping, achieved via urea pyrolysis, effectively modulates the adsorption of Cr(II) species and enhances electron transfer, leading to significantly improved kinetics of the Cr(II)/Cr(III) reaction. The material demonstrates a high discharge capacity of 689.3 mAh and an energy efficiency of 72.

Danio rerio ABC transporter genes abcb3 and abcb7 play a protecting role against metal contamination [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
International audienceATP‐binding cassette (ABC) proteins are efflux transporters and some of them are involved in xenobiotic detoxification. The involvement of four zebrafish ABC transporters in cadmium, zinc and mercury detoxification was characterized
