Giant Viruses of the Kutch Desert [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The Kutch desert (Great Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, India) is a unique ecosystem: in the larger part of the year it is a hot, salty desert that is flooded regularly in the Indian monsoon season.

Serine-like proteolytic enzymes correlated with differential pathogenicity in patients with acute Acanthamoeba keratitis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
P>Acute ocular infection due to free-living amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba is characterized by severe pain, loss of corneal transparency and, eventually, blindness.

Eukaryote‐Wide Distribution of a Family of Longin Domain‐Containing GAP Complexes for Small GTPases

open access: yesTraffic, Volume 26, Issue 7-9, July/September 2025.
The three longin domain‐containing GAP complexes ‐ CSW, folliculin, and GATOR1 ‐ have a sporadic but pan‐eukaryotic distribution and were likely already present in LECA in some form. Their catalytic longin domains contain highly conserved sequence motifs, some of which are shared with structurally similar proteins of Asgardarchaeota.

Interaction between Vibrio mimicus and Acanthamoeba castellanii [PDF]

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, 2010
Summary Vibrio mimicus is a Gram‐negative bacterium, which causes gastroenteritis and is closely related to Vibrio cholerae . The environmental reservoir of this bacterium is far from defined.

Microbiology and cell biology of the interaction between Listeria monocytogenes and Acanthamoeba spp. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
L. monocytogenes is ubiquitous in environment and can grow and survive in a wide range of environmental conditions. It contaminates foods via raw materials or food processing environments. However, the current knowledge of its ecology and in particular,

Rare Infectious Diseases: Detection and Clinical Implications

open access: yesiLABMED, Volume 3, Issue 2, Page 148-157, June 2025.
Rare infectious diseases are infections that are uncommon, have a low incidence, and are caused by newly emerging pathogens, cross‐species or ectopic infections, or host immunodeficiencies. The detection and diagnosis of rare infections is one of the main reasons for misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis.

Acanthamoeba castellanii induces host cell death via a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-dependent mechanism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Granulomatous amoebic encephalitis due to Acanthamoeba castellanii is a serious human infection with fatal consequences, but it is not clear how the circulating amoebae interact with the blood-brain barrier and transmigrate into the central nervous ...

Paramoeba atlantica as a Natural Intracellular Niche for Vibrios in Marine Ecosystems

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 27, Issue 6, June 2025.
Various vibrios can colonise a large vacuole called VCV (Vibrio‐containing‐vacuole) within Paramoeba atlantica. The VCVs acidify and the vibrios multiply and remain alive inside the VCVs for hours. The vibrio found associated with Paramoeba atlantica can be pathogenic to oysters, suggesting that Paramoebidae are a potential reservoir for pathogens ...

The susceptibility of pathogenic free-living amebae to chemotherapeutic agents : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Microbiology at Massey University [PDF]

open access: yes, 1979
The treatment of infections caused by pathogenic free-living amebae (PFLA) has, until only recently, been far from successful. The continued screening of chemotherapeutic agents against amebae of the genera Naegleria and Acanthamoeba is therefore of the ...

Strategies to counter transmission of “superbugs” by targeting free-living 3 amoebae [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Bacterial infections have remained significant despite our advances in the development of a plethora of disinfectants as well as antimicrobial chemotherapy.
