Thermodynamic Pathways of Nonequilibrium Solidification in Wire‐Arc Additive Manufacturing Fe‐Based Multicomponent Alloy Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Geometry‐driven thermal behavior in wire‐arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) influences microstructural evolution during nonequilibrium solidification of a chemically complex Fe–Cr–Nb–W–Mo–C nanocomposite system. By comparing different deposits configurations, distinct entropy–cooling rate correlations, segregation, and carbide evolution are revealed ...

The high energy X-ray probe (HEX-P): Resolving the nature of Sgr A* flares, compact object binaries and diffuse X-ray emission in the Galactic center and beyond

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences
HEX-P is a probe-class mission concept that will combine high spatial resolution X-ray imaging (<10″ FWHM) and broad spectral coverage (0.2–80 keV) with an effective area far superior to current facilities’ (including XMM-Newton and NuSTAR).

Tailored Hierarchical Porous Copper Architectures via Three Dimensional Printing and Pressure‐less Sintering for Next‐Generation Lithium‐Metal Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A hierarchical porous copper current collector is fabricated via three‐dimensional printing combined with pressureless sintering to stabilize lithium metal anodes. The interconnected architecture lowers local current density, guides uniform Li deposition within pores, and suppresses dendrite growth.

Reinterpretation of Fermi Acceleration of Cosmic Rays in Terms of Ballistic Surfing Acceleration in Supernova Shocks

open access: yesPhysics
The applicability of the first-order Fermi mechanism—a cornerstone of the diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) model—in explaining the cosmic ray spectrum is reexamined in light of recent observations from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission at ...

Scheme for proton-driven plasma-wakefield acceleration of positively charged particles in a hollow plasma channel

open access: yesPhysical Review Special Topics. Accelerators and Beams, 2013
A new scheme for accelerating positively charged particles in a plasma-wakefield accelerator is proposed. If the proton drive beam propagates in a hollow plasma channel, and the beam radius is of order of the channel width, the space charge force of the ...

Thermomechanical Fatigue and Creep–Fatigue Interaction of Inconel 718 Additively Manufactured by Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Thermomechanical fatigue tests of laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF‐LB) Inconel 718 show that the additively manufactured material reaches almost the lifetimes of conventionally‐rolled material under no‐dwell conditions. Introducing dwell times at the maximum temperature markedly reduces the lifetimes due to pronounced grain boundary sliding associated

The Origin of Energetic Solar Protons: Comparative Analysis of Ground-level Enhancement (GLE) Events and Non-GLE Solar Energetic Particle Events

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series
This study explores the acceleration origins of solar energetic particles (SEPs) by analyzing the energy spectral characteristics of particles in ground-level enhancement (GLE) events and common SEP (non-GLE) events, as well as the correlations of the ...

How interacting winds shape the mechanical feedback of massive star clusters over millions of years

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
In recent years, massive star cluster environments have proved to be bright sources of very-high-energy γ-rays, in particular young clusters that are powered by the winds interacting in their cores.

Turbulent pair dispersion in the presence of gravity

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2015
Turbulent pair dispersion of heavy particles is strongly altered when particles of two different Stokes numbers (bidisperse) are considered, and this is further compounded when a uniform gravitational acceleration is present.
