Quasi-in-situ characterization of microstructure evolution in friction stir welding of aluminum alloy

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2023
The in-situ investigation of microstructure evolution during friction stir welding (FSW) can provide very important theoretical guidance to control the microstructure and mechanical properties of the FSW joint.

Dynamic mechanical characteristics and failure mode of serpentine under a three-dimensional high static load and frequent dynamic disturbance.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
The improved split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) was used to study the dynamic mechanical properties and failure characteristics of surrounding rock in deep rock mass engineering that is under high stress and affected by blasting excavation and other ...

A probabilistic study on seismic induced accumulated plastic strain

open access: yes, 2023
A linearization method based on the work of Nguyen [Analyse systématique du concept de comportement linéaire équivalent en ingénierie sismique, PhD., université Paris-Est; EDF; ESTP, Cachan (2017)] is extended in this paper. The method is based on the fitting of the relative acceleration transfer function of a linear SDOF oscillator on non-linear ...

Dislocation accumulation at large plastic strains -- An approach to the theoretical strength of materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
The usual method of introducing engineers to the concept of dislocations and their role in plastic flow is to compare an estimate of the theoretical strength of solid (of order {micro}/30 where {micro} is the shear modulus) and the observed strength of either single crystals ({mu}/10{sup 4}) or practical engineering material such as structural steels ...

Laboratory Model Tests of Seismic Strain Response of Anti-Seismic Anchor Cables

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
Under the impact of seismic forces, the strain of conventional anchor cables tended to increase sharply in an instant, which could easily cause the anchor cables to fail due to stress overload.

PARK(ing) time–How park deficiency affects the biological clock in a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Drosophila park mutants serve as a model for Parkinson's disease. We used this strain to investigate the connection between oxidative stress and the circadian clock mechanism. We showed that increased oxidative stress affects the physiology of pacemaker cells, disrupting their daily structural plasticity. Lack of rhythmic signaling from pacemaker cells

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

A model of grain refinement and strengthening of Al alloys due to cold severe plastic deformation

open access: yes, 2012
This paper presents a model which quantitatively predicts grain refinement and strength/hardness of Al alloys after very high levels of cold deformation through processes including cold rolling, equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), multiple forging (MF)

Formation mechanism of continuous gas leakage paths in cement sheath during hydraulic fracturing

open access: yesEnergy Science & Engineering, 2020
Continuous gas leakage paths of cement sheath during hydraulic fracturing were investigated in this study. The finite‐element models of a casing–cement‐sheath–formation assembly for the whole wellbore were established, the integrity of the cement sheath ...

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.
