An eye on long‐duration spaceflight: Controversies, countermeasures and challenges

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Space flight‐associated neuroocular syndrome (SANS) is a consequence of long‐duration space flight and is detected in two‐thirds of astronauts. In‐flight, this can cause a change in the refraction of the eyes, requiring graded hypermetropic ‘superfocus adjustable’ glasses, optic nerve head oedema and choroidal folds.

Uncovering the impact of the cardiovascular system on cerebrovascular health using MRI

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Human cerebrovasculature is finely tuned to enable local changes in blood flow to meet the brain's demands, whilst protecting the brain from systemic changes in blood pressure, both acutely during a heartbeat and chronically over time. This review summarises cerebrovascular structure and function, their role in disease and neurodegeneration ...

Phenotype-dependent functional and pharmacological properties of BK channels in skeletal muscle: Effects of microgravity

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2005
We investigated the involvement of calcium-activated potassium channel (BK) in skeletal muscle phenotype determination and response to acetazolamide, a BK opener.

Acetazolamide and SGLT2 inhibitor as potent drugs for a patient with diabetes mellitus and worsening chronic lymphedema: A case report

open access: yesVeins and Lymphatics, 2020
Treatment of lymphedema using a pharmacologic approach is reported to have limited efficacy. Here, I report a patient with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and acute worsening of her chronic lymphedema, in whom treatment with acetazolamide and a sodiumglucose ...

Extracranial-intracranial bypass in atherosclerotic cerebrovascular disease: Report of a single centre experience [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Despite the failure of the international extracranial-intracranial (EC-IC) bypass study in showing the benefit of bypass procedure for prevention of stroke recurrence, it has been regarded to be beneficial in a subgroup of well-selected patients with ...

Optimizing cerebrovascular endothelial health through shear stress modulation

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The endothelium plays a pivotal role in regulating cerebrovascular blood flow, and its dysfunction increases the risk of cerebrovascular disease. Endothelial shear stress, a primary mechanical stimulus for endothelial nitric oxide production, is a key modulator of vascular adaptation.

How do physiological networks respond to normobaric hypoxia and isometric exercise?

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The dynamics of physiological systems are impacted by both exercise and hypoxia. Network models can be used to map the interactions between various physiological components in environmental physiology and exercise using the concepts of information theory.
