Hypoglycemia is not a defining feature of metabolic crisis in mitochondrial 3‐hydroxy‐3‐methylglutaryl‐CoA synthase deficiency: Further evidence of specific biochemical markers which may aid diagnosis

open access: yesJIMD Reports, 2020
Mitochondrial 3‐hydroxy‐3‐methylglutaryl‐CoA (HMG Co‐A) synthase (mHS) deficiency is an autosomal recessive disorder of ketone body synthesis which has traditionally been associated with hypoketotic hypoglycemia, hepatomegaly and encephalopathy ...

Effectiveness of Over‐The‐Counter Treatments for Tinnitus Symptom Relief: A Systematic Review

open access: yesLaryngoscope Investigative Otolaryngology, Volume 11, Issue 2, April 2026.
This systematic review of randomized trials evaluated over‐the‐counter agents, primarily melatonin, Ginkgo biloba, zinc, and antioxidant combinations, for subjective tinnitus, using the Tinnitus Handicap Index (THI) as the primary outcome. At present, no OTC therapy can be recommended as an evidence‐based treatment for tinnitus, either alone or as an ...

OCTN2 Activates a Non‐Canonical Carnitine Metabolic Pathway to Promote MASH‐HCC Progression and Immunotherapy Resistance

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 16, 18 March 2026.
In non‐MASH‐HCC, L‐carnitine promotes tumor progression primarily through its classical role in enhancing fatty acid oxidation (FAO). However, in MASH‐HCC, where FAO is markedly suppressed, L‐carnitine shifts from this canonical function to serve instead as an intracellular acetyl group buffer.

Maintenance of Carnitine Homeostasis as a Therapeutic Strategy to Attenuate Cisplatin‐Induced Acute Kidney Injury

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 7, Issue 2, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Acute kidney injury (AKI) has emerged as a significant global public health concern due to its high morbidity and mortality rates. Cisplatin, a highly effective and widely used chemotherapeutic agent, is often limited in clinical application by its nephrotoxicity, particularly AKI.

Acetyl-carnitine improves hyperactivity and learning deficits in KAT6A haploinsufficient mice

open access: yesLife Science Alliance
In this study, the authors show that treatment with acetyl-carnitine can ameliorate learning and memory defects and hyperactivity in a mouse model of the cognitive disorder, Arboleda–Tham syndrome.

A Multi‐Organ Atlas Links Gut Microbial Metabolites to Systemic Redox Changes in Aging Mice

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 3, March 2026.
A gut‐derived metabolic signature drives systemic aging phenotypes. Integrated multi‐omics profiling of young versus aged mice identifies a conserved aging signature characterized by the depletion of protective lysophosphatidylcholines (LPC 22:0) and the concurrent accumulation of pro‐oxidative microbial catabolites (TMAO, IAA).

Enzymological determination of free carnitine concentrations in rat tissues

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1964
Purified carnitine acetyltransferase was employed to catalyze the reaction:Carnitine+acetylCoA⇌acetylcarnitine+CoA. In the presence of a known excess of acetyl CoA, free CoA released was determined simultaneously in a coupled spectrophotometric assay ...

Seminal plasma metabolome in relation to semen quality and urinary phthalate metabolites among Chinese adult men

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2019
Background: A growing body of evidence has found links between endocrine disruptor phthalates and male reproductive disorders, but the mechanisms underlying these relationships are poorly known.

Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses reveal the spatial role of carnitine metabolism in the progression of hepatitis B virus cirrhosis to hepatocellular carcinoma

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
IntroductionLiver cirrhosis (LC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) resulting from chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection are major health concerns.
